Smile NOW FEATURING...GILLIGAN'S M-OTHER-IN-LAW

I didn't actually think the native girl was so bad looking even though she was overweight. At some points, her face even looked a little Elizabeth Tayloresque.

You could feel that pinch when they pull the earring out of her nose.

The joke about the native couple arguing just like their more "civilized" counterparts is great!

It surprised me that Gilligan and the Professor let the chief throw those knives at Gilligan. Wasn't that already playing "too rough"? Likewise, I found it surprising that, after what happened, they packed Gilligan off to go alone to the natives' island to be Harouki's best man. Any thoughts on these?

Why do you think Harouki chose Gilligan (his former rival in his eyes) to be his best man? Was this a "bury the hatchet" gesture?

I loved the way the Howells got into the native wedding.

Do you think Gilligan was really going to go through with being her husband? Didn't he want to go home also? If he didn't plan on staying with the native girl, who seemed enamoured of him, even if superficially, how was he going to get out of it? Also, isn't this kind of mean for Gilligan--I'm not suggesting he should stay married to her but he seemed not even to care about her feelings in this. He's usually compassionate. How far do you think he was planning to go with this marriage? Consummation also??? Would it have been legal.

Why did the chief throw some of his drink into Maryann's face?

Ginger seducing Harouki and his response is classic!!!

And physique-wise, none of the male castaways measure up to Haruki. It was cruel to judge the girl merely by her size.

I find the knife throwing scene rather disturbing. There is poor Gilligan, terrified and literally screaming for the Skipper to save him from almost certain death or serious injury, and neither the Skipper nor the Professor even try to stop the proceedings. At least the Skipper speaks up about the spear-throwing contest, but I agree: this was just as dangerous. And as for Gilligan's going off and being Haruki's best man, that was downright insane. Even if Haruki's letting bygones be bygones, Gilligan can't understand a word of the tribe's language! How's he going to manage?

He seemed to feel he was being bullied into it, both by his friends and by the natives. Since no one was too worried about his feelings (including the girl, I must say) perhaps this was why he wasn't worried the feelings of his future bride. And from the way he kept pushing her hand away from him, I don't think consummation was part of the game plan. Even if the girl had been Kalani, I think Gilligan's still just too nervous in the service.

I thought it was a little shallow of the Skipper to reject the native maiden because her appearance wasn't exactly ideal. I mean, he was no matinee idol himself

Like Gilligan said, maybe they can go on a diet together during their honeymoon.

Maybe it's because I've only been watching the TV Land edits (don't have the DVD's yet), but it seem like Mary Ann is barely in this episode.
