DirecTV's 101 Network has acquired uncensored, off-net runs of gritty HBO dramas "Deadwood" and "Oz." Pickup reps the first time either show has been run on TV outside of HBO. DirecTV will begin airing both shows on Sunday nights staring May 31. "Deadwood" and "Oz" also will be offered via DirecTV's on-demand service. Deal includes all 36 episodes of "Deadwood," which will run at 9 p.m., and 56 segs of "Oz," which will follow at 10 p.m. Shows will run unedited, without commercials and in high definition. The 101 Network, best known for striking a deal with NBC Universal to keep critical darling "Friday Night Lights" alive, also has made a name for itself in recent months by bringing back old episodes of short-lived series like "Wonderland," "The Nine" and "Smith." The network recently aired Showtime's limited series "Sleeper Cell." "Deadwood" and "Oz" had limited appeal in the off-net world due to content issues and the shows' small episode counts. Hence the 101 likely acquired the shows at a bargain price. "We are committed to bringing the highest-quality shows to our subscribers, and these are two of the most riveting dramas ever made for television," said the 101 Network VP-general manager Patty Ishimoto. David Milch created and exec-produced "Deadwood," which starred Ian McShane and Timothy Olyphant. The salty-language oater scored several Emmy and Golden Globe nods during its run. "Oz" was wasn't shy in its tough-talking dialogue, either. Series, which starred Ernie Hudson, Harold Perrineau and J.K Simmons, among others, came from Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana. |
