This has probably been answered somewhere on the board, but bear with me---why did the guys refer to each other by their last names? Jackie and Donna are called by their first names, and they call the guys by their first names--except for Hyde--so why the 'Kelso Foreman and Hyde titles?

In the 70's it was considered "cool" for guys to refer to each other by their last names. So I guess the producers were being true to the time period by having the characters do that on the show.

I always thought it had to do with sports.
Ya know like if you play football in school the coach calls you by your last name.

Kelso called Eric by his first name a lot, way more then Hyde did...I don't remember ONCE where Steven cspecifically was talking to Eric and called him by his first name. I remember times where Hyde said Eric's name, but was talking to somebody else besides him, or mentioned him...but that's it.

As others have said, it was just "normal" to call guys by their surnames. I remember wishing I had a "cool" last name so that I could be called by it too.
![]() I thought it was still done to this day, but guess not. |

A lot of the guys in my school still call each other by their last names. It's mostly the ones on the football team that do that. I am also called by my last name, but that's because there's way too many Brittanys in my school.
