TV Which Shows Are On The Bubble For The Next Fall Season?

Which shows are renewed, canceled, or on the bubble?
Posted Apr 16th 2009 1:40PM by Bob Sassone

The networks haven't announced their official fall schedules yet. That happens next month at the network upfronts, or whatever each network is now calling them - upfronts, announcements, presentations. But just from seeing the ratings of certain shows and stories that have leaked to the press already we can get at least a fairly accurate idea of which shows are going to definitely be renewed, which are probably canceled, and which shows are "on the bubble." ("On the bubble" means they're in the middle, balanced on the fence between getting canceled and being renewed. It's named after Sebastian Bubble, an executive at NBC in the early 50s.)

USA Today has a complete rundown of all of the network shows you might be wondering about (in handy chart form!). After the jump, a look at some of the more interesting possibilities.

Over at ABC, it's a no-brainer that shows like Lost, Desperate Housewives, and Grey's Anatomy will be renewed, but Samantha Who? is on the bubble.

NBC's 30 Rock, The Office, and Heroes are coming back (and I would bet that Parks and Recreation will be back too), but Chuck (noooooo!) and My Name Is Earl are both in the bubble category.

As for CBS, you can guarantee that The Mentalist, Two and a Half Men, and all of the various CSI shows will be back, but it looks like longtime favorites Cold Case, Without A Trace, and The Unit aren't a sure thing to come back at all.

It looks like FOX is going to cancel Dollhouse and The Sarah Connor Chronicles, but most of their other shows will be back.

As for The CW, the only show there's a question about is Privileged. Gossip Girl, 90210, Smallville, Supernatural, and One Tree Hill will all be back next season.

Now we just have to wait for those network announcements next month and see which new shows will be coming this fall.

The only show that I watch that is really on the bubble is Chuck. Maybe Fringe but I do think that will return. MNIE will probably go to Fox if NBC cancels it.

Gary Unmarried and The New Adventures Of Old Christine are both on the bubble... i've heard that one or the other will come back but not both because CBS wants to keep Wed nights as a comedy night but wants to launch a new series there---i'm guessing New christine will be back but not Gary...

What a ****ing crock. They want to off WAT and CC because they skew too old. GOD...YOUNGER PEOPLE WATCH THOSE SHOWS TOO. And who's so damn sure than these coveted 18-49 year olds are spending money with advertisers?? Every notice that quite a few shows who get those demos also get really ****ty ratings?? Wouldn't companies want as many eyes as possible seeing their ads??????

**** You CBS.

That's CW's whole schedule anyway, LOL. They have to return or they wouldn't have a network.

I don't get Without a Trace at all. This week, it outrated CSI: NY in both total viewers and the demo, yet that show is never on the bubble. I don't get it - but, i think we'll definitely be seeing WaT back at 10pm next season. Cold Case, I don't know. It has to be one of their more expensive dramas.

Kind of funny that CBS has a problem skewing too old. All of their big shows skew old.

I really don't think CC and WAT will be canceled. I think this is probably just a warning that they need to cut costs because of the economy, not because they are in actual danger. I could see one going(probably CC) but not both, though even that is doubtful. The Unit and Eleventh Hour are the two dramas I see going before those do.

Yeah...I can't imagine their costume/hair/makeup/prop budget is too small. And I don't want to know how much they spend on music rights. I like how authentic they make things look though. Well worth the $.

It really is - with a nice budget comes a nice show, well executed and everything. It's too bad they're going to have to cut it. I can see a lot less music if it does come back, which is too bad, because that's a staple of Cold Case.

I get so tired of hearing about the Demo all the time. That's the problem with TV anymore. They don't program the best possible shows they can...all they care about is the demo. Well they must not be getting them to watch because network tv is in the most trouble they've ever been.

Since Chuck isn't up againist House, Big Bang or Mother this week as they are all in repeats, it'll be interesting to see if ratings climb. I think this Monday will be make or break. If it does better NBC will realize that it needs to be elsewhere on their schedule next year, and not leading off one of television's most competitive nights!

The only problem with that is that they are in the middle of a story arc involving Chuck's father so it will be harder for casual viewers to understand what is going on. Also Bones is airing on Fox so I think that will provide some competition.

Bones could provide some competition. If Chuck and Heroes could get above 7 million, and Medium get above 8 million, all 3 shows will easily be worthy of renewal to NBC.

Desperate Housewives is not on the bubble. You need to read Solomon, because the article did not say that. It is one of the top TV shows still. And it will be on for at least 9 seasons.
