Question Ever been intimidated to reach out to someone here, only to find out that they were..

An absolute sweetheart in real life? This has happened to me a few times, but the one that stands out the most to me is Sarah, (Safety Pin). I always felt a strong connection to her for some reason, but was always nervous about approaching her as friends. I think I was intimidated by her outspokeness on issues, her quick wit, and in the differences in many views that we had, particularly regarding Religion. I always wanted to say hi, but those reasons always kept me from doing it. Eventually it was her who actually reached out to me when I had been away from SO for over a year. She went so far as to contact my sister in-law on myspace, just to see if I was okay. When I heard that it was her that reached out, my eyes actually welled up in tears, because I was so touched that someone who I admired so much, had reached out to me. Now I consider her one of my best friends here, and have enjoyed getting to know her better. She is a sweetheart, and I'm glad she contacted my sister in-law. Had she not, I may not even be back here at S.O. today. So what about you all, have you ever been intimidated by anyone here, only to become good friends with them later?

Sort of. This happened to me, but in a different way. A few people on here I knew about but didn't really know enough, so I was more lazy to get to know somebody if I was always seeing them post. For example, with you Brad, I always saw you posting, but never reached out on a personal level, only to find out now you're a cool person and a down to earth individual, from one dude to the next. Also, this happened with my friend Ramona (littlebelle) on here. We actually argued with each other and got in a few fights aft first, but ended up becoming the best of friends. That's the key. It's hard to get past fears in life but you gotta get past the first stage and reach out to people you feel like you wanna know.

Sarah still scares me!! lol, I'm kidding, of course.

Absolutely, Brad... and still happens, when I first joined, I read a lot of the chit-chat posts, and it was really intimidating. Everyone knew everyone else's name, everyone had something funny to say, and I was like, "Geez, louise, they obviously don't need some new member horning in on the party." But in reality, you guys were really welcoming to me, I know some of you better than others, but I've only been here a few months (and even then I've been gone all of Lent). So yeah, I'm just taking it day by day, you guys are pretty cool.

that brought tears to my eyes, brad. you're a very sweet person. thank you for posting this. i admit, sometimes i worry that the way i talk about some things turns people away and makes them think i'm completely antisocial or even bigoted. my myspace blog would be an absolute nightmare for any sane person who took everything i said seriously, lol. i guess i use a lot of obscure rhetoric and have an unusual sense of humor. i think most of the regular members here get the gist of me by now, but i hope those who don't yet can read your post and understand a little more about me.

i haven't had that experience here on the boards, but it's happened in real life. when i started high school, there was a guy in a few of my classes who was extremely sophisticated yet antisocial. the few times i heard him talk to anyone, he came off as very stewie griffin-esque. he had a reputation as being the evil future dictator of the world. i was really fascinated, but i was too intimidated by his personality to talk to him. i figured he wouldn't like me anyway because he constantly isolated himself from everyone and seemed like the kind of person who would just stare and tell me to go die if i said hi to him. in our junior year, i found him on myspace and added him just for the heck of it. a few months later he sent me a message regarding my suicidal blog entries and totally poured his heart out. he told me he'd always seen me in a different light and the world would be a completely different place without me. he went on to tell me secrets about his past that he'd never told anyone else before. i was so overwhelmed with emotion because i'd never had anyone show so much care for me and he was probably the last person i would have expected it from. long story short, we ended up being each other's first loves. we've broken up but we're still best friends and have feelings for each other. it's amazing to think of us five years ago and then think of the way things are between us now. there's really more than meets the eye with some people.

Hmm, I'm not too sure about that. That is to say I can't think of anyone like that in particular. And I feel bad - I SUCK at keeping in contact with people I like from here. No ifs or buts about it. That's been going on for the last two years and I want to remedy that! Basically, if I don't have your phone # to text, I'm total crap at keeping in contact. Heh.

I'm sure there are people here who think I'm intimidating somehow... Heh. In what way, I don't know. I've been here since I was in my mid-/late teens, and I'm in my mid-20s now. ANYWAY. This place is definitely much better than it was in 2004 for sure.

Really? I thought it was more active back in 2004. Maybe the slump in membership has to do with the fact that younger viewers hate shows with laugh tracks. Oh the pretension and conformity of the internet...

I dunno about the activity - it seems about the same to me. But I can tell you this for sure - board-wide fights have really decreased since 2004, and even 2003. I nearly got chased off here on two different occasions in 2004, and it takes a lot to make me want to leave. I even got a snail-mail letter from a member here (littleinsomniac, rarely posts now) asking me not to leave because the atmosphere here was soooooo tense then.

idk...I'd be intimidated about meeting them in person, but online I think I was always okay.

I just don't answer emails and PMs like I should. And talking on the phone is scary and stressful.

Any idea if Walmart just hires over 18? I need a job soon. It's 11 more months before my 18th though.

When I first found out about Wreckless, it came during the Eagles' rough stretch of back-to-back losses against the Bears and Cowboys.

During those games, he had some profanity-laced threads, and I assumed he was another foul-mouthed fan.

Then, I got to see his pleasant side during the Philles run to a title.

You'd be considered a minor, so you can't work past a certain time by law (10pm). Is this a job search for your first job? I'm gonna be on their overnight crew, and you have to be over 18 for that. As long as you find a job and your shifts end at 10pm or earlier, you should be gold.

Yup, this is a first job search. There's not much choice in my city, but there's a Walmart about 15 minutes from here and another 20-25. I'm sort of picky and hope to not have to do fast food. It just doesn't seem like an atmosphere I could handle well. However, Walmart seems okay. I like their stores, at least those near me. I've heard horror stories about others.

I have nothing against fast food employees, either. I admire them for the crap they have to put up with. That's why I don't think I could handle it.
