I was at my sister's house where my niece was there and found out that she is going to find out the sex of the baby.

Would you want to find out the sex of your first child if you or someone you knew was pregnant?

My mom felt that she wouldn't want to know even though back in the 60's, they didn't have sonograms.

Me, I don't know.

My sister and brother-and-law chose not to find out the sex of their first baby, and now that they are expecting again in July, they are going to be surprised again. I'd probably feel that way if I was pregnant (which I have no plans of ever becoming!!).

I'd definately want to know so I can think of names and be able to buy things so I'm ready ahead of time. I don't think I've ever even known anyone who decided not to find out ahead of time.

I can see the first time wanting it to be a surprise. I mean, my sister and brother-in-law already have tons of boy stuff from their first. If they knew they were having another boy, they'd have tons of hand-me-downs and plenty of toys for boys. All they'd need is diapers, wipes, formula, bottles, etc. See, baby showers should be held AFTER the baby is born. That way, you can get all boy or all girl stuff with no worries!!

Several of my friends have had children, and all of them wanted to find out. They were just too impatient.

My mom decided to be surprised with me, and I think that's kind of nice. She didn't have the doctor tell her, but one of her friends gave her the needle-over-the-belly test and predicted a girl. (She was right for all three of my mom's pregnancies, btw). My parents had it planned either way - they bought neutral colored clothes and had a boys name and a girls name picked out. (In case you're wondering, I was going to be named Christian).

I don't know if I'd want to know or not. I think I'd like to be surprised, at the same time, I don't think I could be that patient for nine months.

I can understand not wanting to know the first time. My friend and her husband decided not know the sex of their first child. They had a boy when my friend became pregnant with her second child they decided to know the sex of the baby. They found out that they were having another boy they decided to hold a diaper/wipes/supply shower as a part of the baptism party. I know a few couples who held baby showers after the babies were born.

With my first one, I wanted to know the sex. I already knew it was going to be a girl before the doctor told me, so it kinda reassured what I already knew. With this one, which is due in October I want to know too. I have already had my mom do the needle over the stomach thing, and it said a boy. I hope its right.

That is a good idea - and VERY practical. However, my sister wants to be surprised again, so oh well.

Hopefully the little one will arrive on October 12th (my parents' 35th anniversary)!!

One of my coworkers and his wife are expecting their third child. They never knew the sexes of the other two children during the pregnancies. They also like being surprised.

LOL.. Hopefully, then my kids' birthdays will be exactly 8 months apart. Easier to remember.
