Would someone please tell me why people in my generation and younger (24 minus), or overly pop culture savvy people hate the older sitcom model? It's starting to really peeve me off. Why is it such a stigma now, online at least, if you, for instance, hate Arrested Development and 30 Rock, but happen to like Night Court and Frasier? Why has the laugh track become the kiss of death? Why are unstable camera angles, stilted acting and awkward pauses and characters staring at each other so funny? Clearly there is something that I don't get. Am I a complete simpleton because of my taste in humor? I consider myself to be a rather intelligent person but apparently because I'm a young person my taste in television is complete ass.

Speaking from someone older....and perhaps (hopefully) wiser....
It's because you have a brain and a mind of your own! You have the intelligence to appreciate WRITTEN humour, instead of relying on "looks" or "pauses" as they do some much now. It's an "instant pleasure" world out there now and I think a lot of young people move so fast (in comparison with my generation) that they don't have the patience to actually get into the sitcom structure of the past. I felt the same thing at your age in music anway. Always have and always will appreciate the "older" stuff. They actually used instruments back in those days! That's just my take anyway......consider yourself a "purist".

I'm 20 and I think Arrested Development is a really good show but most other sitcoms I like are older and traditional ones. I love Frasier and Cheers. |
