Default Blanche Devereaux /Alexis Carrington

Is it me or does it seem the creators of 'The Golden Girls' tried to mimic Joan Collins' "Alexis Carrington" when they created Rue McClanahan's "Blanche"?

Like Alexis, Blanche is the middle age wealthy 'sex kitten' who speaks with a heavy accent, has an active (overactive?) sex life, and millions of men attracted to her. They both have similar hairstyles, similar fashion sense, similar taste in jewels.

To me Alexis was the original, since she was familiar to TV audiences long before 'The Golden Girls' came on TV.

I watched both Dynasty and Golden Girls and never saw any similiarities between Alexis and Blanche. Alexis wanted wealth and power and she was evil when she felt betrayed and vowed to get even with people--especially Blake for banishing her from her children.

Blanche was obsessed with her looks and always after men, but she was not wealthy nor vindictive. I think Alexis's wardrobe alone cost more than what the four of them wore on Golden Girls.

I don't see much similarity, and besides, audiences loved Blanche, and loved to hate Alexis!

Blanche could be at odds, or even be mean to Dorothy, Rose or Sophia, but in the end she thought of them as her family, where Alexis had no love for Krystel, Dominique, or Sammy Jo!

I've never thought about it... it would have been funny if the Girls had done a parody of Dynasty on the show, with Blanche as Alexis and Dorothy as Krystal!

Yes, that would be a hoot. I remember the time Dorothy & Sophia got dressed up as Sonny & Cher & did a # & it was a riot!

I love that episode! It's probably in my Top 20.

When I said similarities, I didn't mean as far as their storylines went in their respective shows (as someone pointed out Alexis was a power-hungry vindicative b!tch).

However, physically Blanche resembled Alexis - the age, hairstyle, the outifts, as well as their distinctive accents and certain aspects of their 'characters' (their sex lives) were very similar.
