Cool Should public schools have Good Friday as a day off?

I think it should depend on the school district. If a lot of staff members and students observe Good Friday and choose to take the day off, then it really is just a wasted day for learning. I know of a couple of towns in my area in recent years that tried to hold school on Good Friday, but hardly anyone showed up, so they went back to having it off.

I went to public school and always had it off. When I went to community college, it was open on Good Friday. I didn't like that. I think that ALL schools should have Good Friday off.

it should be the school/district's individual decision. i know it has to do with religion but i don't know what good friday is, let alone ever had the day off from school. i've never known anyone who's taken the day off to observe it. it's not "wrong" to have a day off because of a religious holiday (unless they do it way too often) but i don't like the idea of it much either.

It always seemed to count as the first day of spring break.

When i was in grammar school and high school, Good Friday was always the LAST day of spring break. We went back to school the folowing Monday. When I went to college, it was the other way around.

Good Friday is the day chosen to memorialise the day that Christ was crucified (like 25th December is to memorialise his birth.)

I think in the UK all schools have the day off.

All schools should be off on Good Friday. It's more important than Easter Monday. We used to always get about a week off anyway so it never was much of an issue when I was in school. I do remember , one time though, that the school used Good Friday as a makeup day because of weather and my Mother wouldn't let me go to school.

I am a teacher in a public school and we have always had Good Friday off...until this year! I can't believe it...we have school Friday. UGH! And we have a huge Catholic population...already parents are telling me their kids are not coming to school Friday. It will be a wasted day...I'm already planning a lot of silly/fun stuff because I can't follow the curriculum if half my class will miss it!

As for it being part of sping break...that never happens here because our spring break is in mid-March!

yeah, we have Jewish holidays off so we get Good Friday off too obviously...although usually our spring break is the week before Easter, so we have it off anyway. the years where its not we still have off though.

That's how it always worked when I was in school - we had Good Friday and then the entire Easter week off as our spring break. My, how times have changed since then.

^ And not for the better it looks like.

All schools should have Good Friday off. It is a day for believers to remember the sacrifice of the Lord.
