Question Did you see it?

I finally got to see "Gilligan's Island: The Musical" myself. I was lucky. Itsfirst stop (I think) on its new tour was at a possible distance from me. It was really alot of fun. You should try to see it if you can. I would really like to hear from anyone else who saw it--I can only talk about it with my friend who saw it last year for me and who is not really a GI fan. I'd love to talk about it with someone. PM me if you have seen it or post something on the boards. Thanks!

I would love to see this if it were at a venue that was accessable by plane or train. I've seen snippets on youtube and it's a hoot.

I haven't seen the show yet, but will in a couple of weeks when the tour comes through. I'd love to chat about it beforehand, though (kind of get an idea of how you liked it, what to expect, etc-- I already more or less know the plot so you wouldn't be spoiling anything). However, I don't want to spoil everyone else on here, so you can send a PM if you'd like to discuss.

May as well throw in an intro now-- I'm brand new here. My interest in the show was sparked again after many years when I played Ginger in a Gilligan's Island dream sequence/parody not too long ago. Lots of fun, by the way, except for the dress sucking my will to live (very tight-- but sparkly!)

SOME SPOILERS for the musical, but no specific plot reveals

Okay, I've seen it now and would be happy to discuss. You can send me a PM if the discussion might be too spoiler-y. Some general thoughts I had-

At first I wasn't sure about the exaggerated style, but after a few minutes I got used to it and thought it worked well. The humor was very reminscent of the show (which makes sense considering who wrote it) and there were bits of and references to some episodes. There were some excellent physical comedy sequences, though I can't go into much detail about them without giving away plot points. The hammock scenes got big laughs straight through.

The show was well cast and I thought everyone captured the characters well. Physical resemblances and mannerisms were good-- impressive considering that most of the cast members are younger than their characters-- by a couple of decades plus in some cases. Some actors "did the voices" of the TV characters-- Lovey, Gilligan, Skipper to some extent and most of all Mr. Howell.

Some were stronger singers than others, but overall good-to-very good singing from all in both solo and group numbers. The standout singer for me was Gilligan.

Favorite musical numbers: Lucky Guy (Gilligan's dancing was great and very in character!), Professor's Lament (yay patter songs!) and Natural Phenomenon (complete with dance interlude performed by Ginger, Professor... and the Professor's textbook. Talk about a third wheel! Of course, the Professor considered Ginger to be the third wheel, not the book. Oh, dear.)

The Professor (my favorite male castaway) was very good-looking. I know it may be shallow to say that this is important to me, but there it is. His long list of obscure degrees (South Seas Construction!) and overly technical speeches/lectures were running jokes that got laughs every time. Also loved his discovery in Act II (all I'm saying) and the lead-up scenes.

Did I mention he was really good-looking? Ahem.

Ginger (my favorite female castaway) was considerably more... shall we say, PG-13 rated in the musical. In the series she was a vamp, but there was a sort of innocence about it. She came off as more of a tease in the series, but not so much in the musical. Between the casting couch references, the "sorry, Mary Ann" and the palm frond sequence (which I got about ten seconds AFTER the audience was already in hysterics) ... Then again, there was considerably more innuendo in general in the musical. Though different, I think the characterization worked and it was very funny.

I am vaguely surprised, however, that she didn't sprain a hip.

The Howells didn't seem to have as much stage time as the others, and most of their interaction was with one another instead of the group at large. This is consistant with the series, though. Lovey's random bouts of clue-lessness were quite funny, and Mr. Howell delivered some of the biggest laugh lines. ("Congress!")

Can't say much more without major spoilers. The audience definitely enjoyed the show-- gave it a standing ovation, in fact. Not going to win any Tony awards, but it makes for a fun night out.

aw, it doesn't look as though the musical is coming anywhere near me.

I looked up the websites and the songs sound really cute!!

lm or lilsoprano: pm me and spoil it!! I'm dying to know details and the chances of me seeing it are zero to none.
