Jon Lovitz Opening His Own Comedy Club...Hopes to Get A Tonight Show Gig With Conan - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Comedian Jon Lovitz and his business partner Frank Kelley will open the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club on the site that formerly housed the BB King Blues Club at Universal's CityWalk on May 28.

Lovitz will both perform at the 400-seat club, which will have a beach theme, and book a lineup of comedy headliners.

Lovitz, best known for his 1985-90 stint on "Saturday Night Live" and films like "A League of Their Own," "Happiness" and "The Stepford Wives," began to focus on stand-up himself about five years ago.

Becoming more involved in the comedy club world, he teamed up in 2007 with Kelley, GM of the Irvine Improv, to open a venue in San Diego called "The Jon Lovitz Comedy Club at Aubergine." In that case, though, the two served more as promoters, using a space in an existing restaurant.

After their experience in San Diego, Lovitz and Kelley began looking for venue they themselves could operate in the Los Angeles area, and when they found the available space at CityWalk, they put together a proposal and quickly struck a deal with Universal.

Lovitz said the new three-level club will differ from existing comedy clubs in L.A. -- most of which have a black-box feel -- in that it will be bright and open with a beachy decor, complete with palm trees, and will also serve up "great food."

"I like Hawaii, and I like the beach. And here you can almost hear the ocean and smell\l the cocoa butter," Lovitz joked.

When the club kicks off in late May, it will offer two shows a night, drawing upon the wide range of headline comics Lovitz has worked with during the course of its career.

He also hopes to work closely with NBC's "The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien," which is relocating to the nearby Universal lot.
