Hey everybody, incase you didnt look in the Life Changing Events thread before coming here I'll give you a quick recap, I am back and doing very well with recovery thank you, but in light of the surgery and some recent events that have happened in my life, I wanted to take it and write about it and thought what better way than through a FOL fan fic, so thats what ithis is. Besides hoping at time you find some ammusment in this I'm writing this for me, to help me through this rough time, except for this opening scene that I am posting tonight the events of this story are real and who knows maybe you all will get something out of it too.

True Friends
It was a dark snowy Thursday night in January of 2009. It was a little after eleven o’clock and Joanna Polniazeck was headed home after spending several hours in the Langley College library researching for her English 102 paper she had due in a couple weeks. The assignment was to write an argumentative paper, she had chosen to argue against abortion, so she had spent her evening buried knee deep in books, newspapers, magazines about the topic, enough to make anybody tired. The weatherman had been calling for this storm all week, five to eight inches of snow in their area with a small chance of an ice and sleet mixture mixed in, farther north more snow and farther south more of the mixture. So, when she left the house that evening after her shift at Edna’s Edibles she didn’t see any harm in driving her motorcycle to campus, much to her boss, landlord, ex-house mother, and close friend Edna Garrett’s disapproval. When Jo stepped outside of the library, she understood why. The clouds had made the moon completely disappear and it was pitch black aside from the streetlights and the white stuff falling from the sky. As she walked to her motorcycle, she realized that there was no snow in this at all, it was strictly sleet, and it was well below freezing so she was going to have to take it very easy on her way home, there was bound to be some slick spots on the road. The farther she drove the more she wished she would’ve taken her best friend Blair Warner up on the offer to borrow her car, these conditions were certainly not meant for motorcycles. She had always been extremely confident in her driving abilities. She would never admit it to Mrs. Garrett, but she had even driven home after a few drinks, but that was nothing compared to this, for the first time in her life she was actually a little bit nervous as she went around the familiar curves taking her back home. She also thought of her other best friend Matt Newton who was at the library with her most of the evening, but as always his inability to focus had gotten the better of him and he left at about eight when some friends invited him to go get something to eat. Of course, he had begged Jo to come with him but she needed to get this research done, her mother’s back was starting to bother her again so Jo was going to go home for the weekend and take over some of her mother’s shifts as a waitress so her mom could relax. If she didn’t get the research tonight, there was no way she was going to get the paper done in time. As she made the turn onto High Street her nerves started to calm, this was her street, she was almost there, and just one more sharp curve and she can go to bed. She wasn’t however, expecting the solid sheet of ice in her lane and when she hit it she knew that she was in trouble, all of her experience on driving motorcycles left her in that moment of fear as she started to try to force the motorcycle to go the other direction. This caused the bike to flip, throwing Jo off and slamming her into a tree, the motorcycle following her and landing awkwardly across her legs. |

Hey Meghan!
Welcome back! I've really missed you. I'm glad to know that you're doing better and I said a prayer that you'll be able to ditch your cane soon. I know these past couple of months have been pretty rough and I'm sorry, but I'm so glad that you're writing again and taking inspiration from your experience. I can say personally that that's a very therapeutic thing to do. In terms of your new story, it sounds very promising. I'm really looking forward to reading your next post. Take care and try not to be such a stranger! ![]() LoveMrsG |

Meghan...Yay! You are back and writing again. This story is going to be great, I can tell. I can't wait for more of it.
I am sorry you've been going through so much, but I am praying things will get better. I am so glad you are out of the wheelchair and I hope you'll be able to get rid of the cane soon too. Anyway...great story and I can't wait to see what happens next. Great to have you back! |

I missed both of you too! Thanks for your kind remarks, as always means alot to me. I have decided to change one thing in this, I'm upping the story to 09 but leaving the girls in college. For me a lot of this experiences has involved a lot of texting, and I couldnt think of a 1984 substitute for it so I felt as if I had to bump it up.
More to come soon! |

![]() In the wee hours of the morning, Jo wakes up lying in a hospital bed trying to remember how she ended up there. The pain in her legs was almost overwhelming as she tried to move them and she threw the sheet off of her and found casts around both of her legs, stopping just below her knee. ‘Two broken legs’ she thought, ‘Great, this is sure to make things interesting, wait why does my right thigh hurt so much too?’ She pulled the hospital gown up a little bit to reveal several bandages starting at her knee and the last fairly close to her hip. ‘What the hell happened?’ she thought and as if someone could read her mind she heard two people in the hallway start talking, a male and a female. The female voice she quickly recognized as Mrs. Garrett, but male voice was new to her, ‘ hopefully it’s a doctor or at least someone who knows what the hell is wrong with me.’ “You’re her boss right?” said the male voice obviously checking to make sure that he was allowed to disclose the information with Mrs. Garrett. “Yes, but I’m practically her mother. She was on my watch throughout high school and now I’m her boss and landlord.” Mrs. Garrett responded calmly to Jo’s surprise, she half expected her to be out of her mind with worry. “Well, first off I’m not entirely sure why anyone would drive a motorcycle in this weather but that’s beside the point. The crash gave her three broken bones, the left and right tibias and the right femur. An odd addition I know but I was told that the motorcycle was on top of her so I’m going to assume that’s what added the femur in.” the doctor explain. ‘Tibias, femur, what the heck is that?’ Jo thought and then noticed that her phone was sitting on the table beside her. She grabbed it and flipped it open revealing several missed calls and text messages. She exited out of everything, needing to send a message before she started going through all of the things she missed. She opened up a blank message at typed Matt into the box labeled “To:” and then typed the message: “Hey you had a nursing class in high school, what is the tibia and femur?” and clicked the “OK” button to send it. ‘Five o’clock in the morning, he’s gonna love that.’ She thought after she looked at the time and then opened up her inbox with three new text messages, one from Blair and two from Matt. The one from Blair read: “Call us when you wake up, are you okay?” The first one from Matt was sent at midnight asking her if she was back home yet, the second was sent at 2:37 after he found out about the accident, probably Blair’s doing, and wanting her to contact him as soon as possible. Well she had taken care of him, now it was time to call and calm down Blair, Natalie and Tootie. ‘Wait, Nat’s dad is a doctor, she might know what tibias and femurs are!’ She began to type in the number for the house but before she finished she received a new text message from Matt. ‘Wow, he replied at five in the morning, he must be worried.’ She clicked the “OK” button to open the message and read: “What did you break them, are you okay? Oh the um tibias are like down by your ankles and the femur is what connects the hip to the knee.” ‘Well that explains things a little bit.’ She thought as she clicked the reply button and typed the message. “Yeah I broke both tibias and my right femur, I hear the doctor outside the door telling Mrs. G. As far as am I okay, I really don’t know yet, in a hell of a lot of pain.” She sent the message as Mrs. Garrett and the doctor walked in. |

This is great Meghan. I am so happy you are writing again. It seems a lot of people are working on fics now...this one, Denise's Fast Lane, Brandon's Freaky Friday, LoveMrsG's 12 Hours, JoPol's Reunion...finally...some life on this board! I was getting lonely around here.
Anyway...I hope you have fun tomorrow. Can't wait for another post! |

Okay its not a whole lot but I'm in a lot of pain so I'm gonna go stretch and see if that puts me out of my misery any, so here's little more.
![]() “Excellent, you’re awake,” the doctor said as he walked in after Mrs. Garrett. “How are you feeling?” He asked as he walked over and checked the machines. “I’m in a lot of pain.” Jo admitted. “Well you do have a morphine pump right here. Just press this button when you’re in pain and it will inject the medicine into your IV. Don’t worry, she cant overdose herself on it, it’s all measured out, once she’s reached her limit it will stop.” He added catching Mrs. Garrett’s worried look. “Only you can push it though, no one else can, so you have to be able to push the button, you can however ask someone to hand it to you if by chance it falls off the bed.” “Okay.” Jo responded. “I suspect you want to know what’s wrong with you?” The doctor asked. “Well I heard you talking to Mrs. G. outside and side that I broke both tibias and my right femur, but what does that mean in terms of recovery?” She asked pressing the morphine button. “Well you can’t put weight on the casts for the first three weeks, and the casts will stay on for three more weeks after that. Then you will come back here, get the casts off, get a set of walking boots which you will wear for a month and start therapy at that time too. Once the casts come off its all up to you as far as rehabilitation goes, but I would say its going to take you around six months to a year to bounce back” He explained, rarely looking up from his clipboard. “Six months to a year.” Jo repeated in shock as she felt her phone vibrate indicating an incoming text message. “This is an odd combination of breaks, your left leg will regain its strength fairly quickly but since you have a break in both parts of the right leg, it will take longer.” He added. “No, I understand.” Jo said and looked to Mrs. Garrett. “I should probably call Blair and see if she can swing by here on her way to class with some stuff.” “Jo, sweetie, we’re not in Peekskill, we’re in New York City at the University Hospital.” Mrs. Garrett said, and brushed her bangs out of her face. “New York?” Jo repeated. “Yes, Peekskill Hospital didn’t know what to do in a situation like this so they sent you here.” She explained. “Oh, okay then.” Jo responded, somewhat in shock. “Well, if you don’t need anything, I’m going to continue to make my rounds, press the nurse button if you need anything.” The doctor said and left. |

Well, stretching didnt work at all, so in order to take my mind off the pain, I wrote a little bit more, once again not much heck this post is barely anything but both of tonights posts equal about one normal post so we're good.
![]() “Is there anything I can get you?” Mrs. Garrett asked, wanting to make Jo as comfortable as possible. She knew this was hard for her but at the same time she knew that she couldn’t truthfully say ‘I know exactly how your feeling’ so she decided that she wasn’t going to, she honestly didn’t know what she was going through, and had a high level of respect for Jo at the moment. She was handling the situation very well, but, then again she hasn’t processed all of the information yet, hopefully she didn’t speak too soon. “No, I…I’m good, thanks.” Jo said picking up her phone waiting for a chance to open Matt’s message. “Well I guess I’m going to go call the girls and tell them what we know. Will you be okay?” She asked not knowing if she should really be leaving Jo alone right now. “I’ll be fine. Hey um, does my mom know about this?” Jo asked, sort of wishing that her mom was there but at the same time hoping she wasn’t, she really couldn’t afford to take off, and now, thanks to her, they have medical bills. “She knows, and she has tomorrow and Sunday off so she’s going to come up then.” Mrs. Garrett said. “At least she’s not taking off of work to come up here.” Jo said and Mrs. Garrett smiled and walked out of the room. As soon as she left Jo opened the text message that read: “Tell someone then, it is so much easier to get and keep the pain under control when you get to it early, don’t try to be strong and tough it out, seriously it only makes it worse.” She smiled at his concern and quickly typed out: “Yeah they have me on a morphine pump, yes I’m using it. Why are you up so early?” As she sent the message she pressed the button making the back of the bed raise her up to where she was sitting up, and she leaned back against the pillows and smiled as she thought about Matt. |

Hey Meghan.
![]() I got caught up and I think you're doing a beautiful job. I feel so sorry for Jo but like FactsFan said, I'm glad she's got Mrs. G. with her. I'm glad too that she's got the nurse she's texting and the morphine pump. Sounds like she really needs it, poor kid. It'll be interesting to see how Jo makes it through the next 6 months-1 year and I know it'll be a tough road ahead. Sounds like it'll be a terrific story and I'm looking forward to the next post! In terms of you, again like FactsFan said, I am so sorry to hear that you're still in pain. Keeping up on your work while you're hurting is very courageous, but don't be TOO courageous...take care of yourself too!

The pain is gone, it went away while I was asleep. I think I overdid it yesterday, when we got to the college I didnt wanna use the wheelchair so at first I didnt. The event was in the universities rec center and was set up around the track so I walked I'd say a good 1/4 of a mile which is more than I've walked since surgery then dad made me get in the wheelchair to go take the tour of the campus but anyway the point of this is thanks for your concern its appreciated.
