Default SO in your outside life

Does SO ever feature at all in your life outside of SO? For example, if you post at other forums, have you told people there that you post here? Have you told friends or family members that you post here? Have you ever convinced a friend or family member to register?

An online friend of mine one registered here but didn't stick around.

heavens no. worlds would collide and my life would go haywire if anyone in my offline life found this place and recognized me. people here know about people in my offline life, and i have mentioned that there is "a group of people i've been talking to for many years but keep private from the rest of my friends because i need the ability to alternate in my life" to my best friend, but i would immediately ask for my whole account to be deleted if they ever found me on here. i'm really careful about what i put on my myspace page so that i don't inadvertently direct them over here.

The only time it collides is if I'm making DVD purchases or trying to remember when a certain show or special is supposed to air.

My husband knows that I post on this forum because I have him read post that I find ridiculous or funny. My mom knows that I post on here because I have tired to get her to register so that she can talk to other people about her soaps. She has come to SO to read spoilers occasionally, but she has never registered.

I remember you saying something similar a few times before. Do you mind if I ask why that's the case? Sorry if I'm being overly inquisitive but I just wonder how or why a "meeting" of the two worlds would have such a tremendous and negative impact upon you.

I post on a Twilight Zone message board and some of the members know I post here. There's at least 4 members or former ones from that board that also post at SO.

somtimes I take the laptop outside to post on SO, but it is entirely weather-dependent.

I never specifically mention S.O. to friends of mine that don't know about it, for a couple reasons. First of all, sometimes I bring up issues on the boards mentioning some of those friends, and Goodness knows I wouldn't want them reading my posts talking about them. lol! Talk about ackward. Another reason is just because I like to keep my online and real world lives separate. I see my real life friends enough, I don't need to be seeing them here too. Plus, I wouldn't want them telling my deepest darkest secrets to my closest online friends. That would be embarrassing, and would probably be my biggest concern.

Same here. Nobody in my offline life knows about SO. I'm always afraid someone at Facebook or MySpace will mention SO. I should just get rid of those accounts anyway, as I just can't get into them. This site is all I can really handle for serious Internet activity. I also worry about my worlds colliding. Talk about an explosion, lol. I've done my best here to not discuss certain people in my offline life, but still, it's there. Coming up to eight years now (WOW), and so far, so good. Of course, someone could be watching.

basically, it would be kind of like writing to dear abby about a problem involving them, and having them find out it was me who sent it. it's not that i'm living a double life or anything, but i've posted a lot of things that i wouldn't want them to read now. this is where i turn to when i need to talk about feelings or personal situations involving them that bother me. it would be not only uncomfortable knowing they can run an instant search and read everything i've posted here since i was in middle school, but i wouldn't feel very free to express my personal life anymore out of fear that they'll read it and question me about it later. it's not that they're bad or controlling people, just that it would be very awkward for all of us.

it should be noted that robyrob has talked to one of my friends from school over myspace, and i'm totally fine with that. i actually went into a fit of hysterical laughter when i was reading her blog and unexpectedly saw that he'd left a funny comment, it was the last thing i would have expected to see. just as long as this site doesn't get referenced, i have no problem with people from both areas of my life talking to each other. i'm not the friend police, lol.

Yes, I can see how that would be awkward for all of you. I don't think I've posted anything too personal about anyone I'm close to but if I ever did I wouldn't want them to know it was me talking about all this stuff.

That happened once with me when a couple of my friends commented on something on my Facebook page (I think it was a status or something like that.) They had a mini-conversation. One of them was an offline friend and the other was an offline one. Neither had met or had previously known the other existed. I found it quite surreal that these two people, who have nothing to connect them except me, were having a conversation on Facebook.

I do sometimes wonder, though, how my online and offline friends would get along if they ever met. Does anyone else do that?

I've been trying to get my husband to become a member of SO since I first started - but he's too busy working on MAME emulators! He knows I post on here - and he too thinks Charles is hilarious!!

I've mentioned this place over on the Soulful Planet forums, but thats about it. I do mention to friends that I post on various forums. If they ask I'll tell them about this place.
