WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Starting June 1, WXII will be replacing its Weather Plus sub-channel with This TV, a free movie and classic television channel offered by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the station announced Monday.

The new channel will be available over-the-air on digital channel 12-2, and on Time-Warner Cable channel 541.

"As you know, weather coverage is -- and will remain -- one of WXII’s top goals. However, we have observed that the phenomenal growth of our weather products has been primarily on the Web and on our main channel," said Hank Price, president and general manager of WXII12 Digital Media.

This TV programming includes 4,000 film and 10,000 television series episodes in agreement with six distinct studio libraries: Cannon, United Artists, Polygram Filmed Entertainment, Orion, Samuel Goldwyn Films and MGM.

Classic television shows such as Patty Duke and Mr. Ed, as well as feature-length movies, will be offered 24 hours per day.

“The channel is gaining momentum as our partners can see the benefit to adding it to their digital offerings given our early ratings performance,” John Bryan, executive vice president of broadcast strategy at MGM told TV Week last year.

“We’re excited to be able to provide viewers with a top quality movie network that will add to the choices they have for free over-the-air local TV service,” Price said.

I'd like to see more of the 10,000 television episodes they say they have. So far, the programming has been about 80% movies and 20% television shows.

None of the stations in my market haven't bothered to start any digital subchannels, except for the Fox one, which carries the MNTV signal on one (it used to be 4 low power transmitters).
