Scrubs moving from NBC to ABC has highlighted something to me, how networks & their shows handle credits & tag-scenes differently. For the entirety of Scrubs' stay on NBC, the credits would roll over an ending theme tune and still shots from the episode. Now the show is on ABC there are bloopers while the end credits roll.
ABC seems to to be the main network where credits will roll over bloopers or simply a tag-scene, a part of the actual show. ABC shows from the past like Home Improvement, Hope & Faith, had the bloopers or tag-scene during the credits. I notice CBS doesn't, Everybody Loves Raymond & The King of Queens didn't (usually, at least) have scenes running while the credits roll. CBS' current sitcoms don't either. On NBC, Friends would have a scene while the credits rolled, but I'm not sure if their current shows do this. Frasier, of course, did its own thing as it had a scene played out but without any sound - just the end music. Some shows would do both: Just Shoot Me, 8 Simple Rules, Will & Grace, are shows I can think of. I wonder who decides, and why they decide what they do, whether to have bloopers or a scene during the end credits or whether they should play a themetune and show pictures (or a blank screen). I figure sometimes it's an editorial decision by the producers, like not having a tag scene after a cliff hanger has just been set. But, on the greater decision why do certain networks seem to do it differently? I gather advertising has something to do with it, obviously if it's just music & pictures playing then you can talk over it and cram it to the side or whatever .... but is there a different reason? Does anybody know when having a scene during the credits was first used? I can't remember any 80s shows that did it. Cheers, Golden Girls, didn't. |

A few eps. of Mary Tyler Moore had the credits playing over the outtake of a scene in action.
The Golden Girls started frequently doing that practice in the very late '80s or sometime in the very early '90s. It's spin-off Empty Nest did it much more frequently in the '90s. |
