Default Gimme a Break!

One thing that still seems to be a hot topic on this page is people's memories of continuity errors! Someone even went as far as responding to my post about how this pertains to the "Flintstones"! Well, back in the day, one sereis that I was very fond of was "Gimme a Break!" I grew up having the biggest crush on the character of Julie! Well, in any case, when the "Golden Girls" first came out, it was on the same channel and even shown on the same night as "Gimme a Break!" I would be very interested in knowing if anyone reading this was a couch potato like me who would sit and watch sitcoms from eight to ten Eastern Time on Saturday nights. Well, in any event, a while back, I started a thread on that show's page of this site and called it the "Golden Girls". This post was for the dual purpose of telling by buddies there about what was going on here and to point out two conflicting points of view expressed on two episodes of that sereis. So far, this thread has no responses. Well, in any event, less than half an hour ago, I posted a follow-up thread called the "Flintstones". I would be very interested in what any of you folks think of the things that I pointed out in either thread!

Blanche and the Younger Man

This was a good episode because it showed that all mothers and sons turn around and treat their parents like children at some point. I think it was a good episode as it proved that although Rose cornered her mother, she did it out of loving and understanding. I think Alma was a very funny character and the connection between her and Sophia was very funny.

[Blanche is exercising in a crouched position as Dorothy watches]
Dorothy: The only time I get in that position is when I give birth.

Rose: I want you all to meet my mother, Mrs. Lindstrom. THIS IS BLANCHE AND THIS IS DOROTHY AND SOPHIA!
Dorothy: VERY NICE TO MEET YOU. TELL ME HOW WAS YOUR TRIP?
Alma Lindstrom: IT WAS JUST FINE!
(to Rose)
Alma Lindstrom: Which one of them is hard of hearing?

Alma: I hired a farm hand. He was such a nice young man. He raved about my cooking. I guess they didn't feed him very well in prison.

Blanche: Why Dirk, did I just hear you ask me for a date?
Sophia: Are you deaf? I heard him from here.

Dorothy: My God, I hope Alma's all right.
Sophia: Don't worry about Alma. She's a tough old broad!

I am bringing this thread back to the top of the page to see if I can stimulate some more conversation about continuity errors. The "Golden Girls" was full of them! One thing that I would really like other peoples' feedback on is how this sereis compares to other show in which there were inconsistancies from episode. When I first started this thread, I mentioned the "Flintstones" and "Gimme a Break!". Other shows that I remember controdicting episodes include, the Brady Bunch, Sesame Street, Gilligan's Island and Three's Company. Can anyone reading this think of any others?

The Andy Griffith Show was full of contradictions (as noted in the 1985
book, by Ken Beck and Jim Clark). A few of these inconsistences include:

Goober Pyle was once called Goober Beasley by Andy.
In one episode, Floyd Lawson is called Floyd Colby.
Three different addresses are given as the home of the Taylors (14 Maple,
24 Elm, and 322 Maple).
Floyd Lawson has a son and wife in a couple of episodes, but he is a widower
with no children in one episode.
Gomer Pyle is not much of a mechanic in early episodes. He just puimps gas.
Later, he can diagnose and fix all sorts of mechanical problems.
On several occasions, Barney says it's 12 miles to Mt. Pilot, but Andy says it's
an hour's drive; Emmett once said it was about a 30-minute drive.
Raleigh is said to be 50 or 60 miles from Mayberry, but it once took Emmett
five hours to drive from Raleigh to Mayberry.

One thing I remember from the show was that Aunt Bee's friend Clara was called Bertha in early episodes then for some reason they changed her name to Clara.

I know this has been mentioned before, probably several times. But the one continuity error that bugs me the most is when Dorothy said her grandmother (Sophia's mother) was 94 when Dorothy was only 6. That is the biggest blunder ever on the show. Sophia was supposed to be 25 years older than Dorothy (they were 55 and 80 when the show started). So I guess that means Sophia's mother was 63 when she gave birth to Sophia. OK.......whatever. The Michael age changes bug the heck out of me too (29 to 22 to 30).

Another clear controdiction was when Rose went from being that Valor Dictorian of Saint Olef High to her having never graduated and studying for her GED!
