I Found a Treasure on Saturday! - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

On Saturday afternoon I was at Value Village and decided to look at their DVD's just for fun. I'd never found anything even remotely interesting there before. Certainly no TV DVD's. This time however I did find something. I found a 2 DVD set containing 16 episodes of the late 1950's series "Love That Bob" (also known as The Bob Cummings Show). It stars Bob Cummings as a bachelor/ladies man who owns and operates his own photography studio. His receptionist is played by Ann B. Davis (who would later play house keeper Alice Nelson on The Brady Bunch). At home Bob lived with his widowed sister Margaret played by Rosemary DeCamp (she would go on to play Ann Marie's mother on That Girl, Aunt Helen on Petticoat Junction, and Shirley Partridge's mom on The Partridge Family). Also living in the house was Margaret's son Chuck played by Dwayne Hickman(who after this series took on the title role in The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis)

There were also well known names behind the camera. The show was produced by Paul Henning who would go on to create and produce The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, and Petticoat Junction. The episodes were directed by Rodney Amateau who also directed and produced on such shows as Burns and Allen, Dobie Gillis, Dukes of Hazzard, and Enos among others.

So far I have watched 7 of the 16 episodes. I found the more I watch this show the more it grows on me. Three of the episodes I've watched featured Nancy Kulp (Miss Jane Hathaway from The Hillbillies) guest starring as a bird watcher named Pamela Livingstone. One episode had Ms. Kulp playing both Pamela and Pamela's grandmother. It's fascinating to see Nancy Kulp in a role other than Miss Jane and it was very fascinating to see Nancy Kulp and Ann B. Davis share a scene together. Not only am I discovering a TV series from the past that I had not previously seen but with all the well known names in front of and behind the cameras I'm also getting a history lesson in Sitcoms.

So if you find yourself in second hand store or thrift store don't hesitate to look at whatever DVD's they might have . You never know when you'll find a treasure. I should know. I found one!

I've heard of this show before, but have never seen it. Sounds great! It was mentioned in the 101 Greatest Sitcoms book.

By the way, did you know that Ann B. Davis won two Emmy's for her role as Charmaine "Schultzy" Schultz on Love That Bob?

I remember that show from the 50's. My dad used to watch it. I remember Ann B. Davis very well. My dad always liked her.

i once found a first edition hardcover of Stephen King's "The Shining" in a Value Village for $1, I have found some other cool books and stuff over the years but I stopped going to those stores because there aren't any near where I live anymore

I've finished watching all 16 episodes and they were fun to watch. After watching Rosemary DeCamp's performance on this series I feel she is a very underrated and under appreciated actress. I was also impressed by Dwayne Hickman's portrayal of her son Chuck. It's a shame so many people remember him only as Dobie Gillis. Bob Cummings did a great job playing the lead character in this series.(in many episodes he also played his characters Grandpa) It is a shame he is not better remembered today. Of course the real star of the series was Anne B. Davis. It's no wonder she won two Emmys playing this part. It was great to discover a fun older series that you don't see on TV every day(or any day really!).

I remember watching that show on CBN in the early '80's. Sadly I've not seen it since.

I haven't seen The Bob Cumming's Show since the late 70's. It was part of an oldies show called Those were the Years that aired every Friday at 11:30pm and featured 3 hour blocks of old shows and Flash Gordon serials. Some shows aired each week but most were on a rotating schedule. The station that aired it was WBTV in Charlotte, NC which is a CBS affiliate. It was a locally produced show but CBS decided that continuous news during late-night was more practical so it was canned sometime around 1980-81.

A few years ago I did buy a VHS tape of the Bill Dana Show. The quality wasn't very good but it was only a couple dollars and I had never seen it before. It was worth it. It's great watching some classics that are never seen anymore.
