Movie Owen Wilson Is On Board For Movie Adaptation Of "Alias Smith & Jones"

Wilson All Set For Alias Smith & Jones Movie
17 March 2009 5:15 AM, PDT

Owen Wilson is reportedly heading back to the Wild West for a movie adaptation of cult TV series Alias Smith & Jones.

The Marley & Me star recently confirmed plans were afoot for the project, based on the hit 1970s show about a pair of outlaws.

Wilson says, "We're thinking about (doing) the Western Alias Smith and Jones.

The TV series featured Pete Duel as Hannibal Heyes (aka Joshua Smith) and Ben Murphy as Jed 'Kid' Curry (aka Thaddeus Jones) and ran for 50 episodes between 1971 and 1973.

Cool

I hope they don't ruin this one like they did with "Wild, Wild West".

That's what they say about all tv series made for the big screen. The only problem is that they rarely get it right.

That's true. I'm hoping this will be one of those rarities but, I won't hold my breath.

A lot of "fresh ideas" from the past, ala films from the '30s and '40s were adapted from stage plays or books. Heck, even then, they were remaking silent pictures into "talkies". There is nothing new under the sun, but I get the frustration that almost now everything that was from the '80s seems to be ripe for a remake and now even obscure TV series can be adapted.

I'm going to be honest and say that I had never heard of this program before.

How popular exactly was Smith & Jones? Does it air on re-runs today?

I'm not sure how it did ratings wise originally although I've heard that the show went downhill after the death of Pete Duel. He was replaced by Roger Davis who had previously served as the show's narrator. It was syndicated for years & TV Land and Starz were the last to air it nationally. I think the show developed a stronger fan base in syndication.

Some RTN stations are airing it on the weekends.

it also reran for years on the old CBN Cable (the predecessor, 2 incarnations removed, of ABC Family), which is how I discovered the show.

The first season (with Pete Duel) is available on DVD. Roger Davis, prior to AS&J, was a regular on Dark Shadows. He was also once married to Jaclyn Smith.
