I was searching images of O&H, trying to find one for an avatar when a pic of two little kids on an ep. of O&H caught my eye. I clicked on the link and found an interview with the former child actress Katie Sweet.
She was in the episode The Runaways, and had some really cute scenes with Ozzie. I've only seen the episode once, unfortunately I didn't get to tape that episode, but I've always remembered it. She played the part of Katie, and Ozzie sings Ka Ka Ka Katie to her; of course, over a bowl of ice cream! In the interview Katie tells how she started in show business. Here's the part relevant to Ozzie and Harriet. Where it all began: The Tom Duggan Show Jim - You've been doing this - - the earliest listing I have is Crimson Kimono and Fine Young Cannibals - you were doing this when you were four or five years old, then? Katie - When I started, I was two-and-a-half. There was a late-night TV talk-show deal in Los Angeles called The Tom Duggan Show, and I was in the audience with, I don't know who I was with, my mom or my aunt and uncle or somebody - - and because I was so *little*, they called me up and had me talk to the host, Tom Duggan. And it just so happened, Jim, that *Ozzie and Harriet* were watching! And they had an episode where they were looking for a little girl my age - - and I was very *verbal* and could carry a conversation -- I talked early. And they called up the Tom Duggan people and they got them in touch with "my people" and I went! So, Ozzie and Harriet was my first appearance. Jim - Wow. Katie - And it was "The Runaways" episode. It was -- do you know the name Donald Losby? Jim - The actor? Katie - He was a child actor -- and I've Googled him - he's out there on the web and stuff - - he was my brother in that episode. So, after Ozzie and Harriet, I think the next thing I did was a Bob Hope movie, Alias: Jesse James with Maureen O'Hara. Bob Hope and Maureen O'Hara were the principals. And I played their kid - - it was really just a quickie thing. It wasn't like, a lot of lines or anything. On Ozzie and Harriet, I had a lot of lines, and it was a big deal. Jim - And you were only two-and-a-half or three years old when you were doing this. Katie - Yeah, I was two-and-a-half when I did Ozzie and Harriet and three by the time I did Alias: Jesse James. Then, I got an agent, of course, and you go on interviews, and I would go interview for things and just got a lot of stuff. I think a lot of it was that I spoke a lot. In All the Fine Young Cannibals, when I was hired for that, I didn't have a speaking role. There was a girl who was older than I was - - by two or three years - - she just couldn't get the lines out. And I was just very *chatty* and everything, so I got the lines! And of course my scale went up, too - - a speaking role is worth more than a non-speaking role. So, I think it had a lot to do with the jobs - my verbal skills from an early age. And not that I wasn't just as cute as a bug's ear, too, Jim, I mean, come on! Jim - Oh definitely - you were great! The Runaways is one of my favorite episodes. I did a little synopsis in another thread, so I will cut and paste it below.
Katie Sweet was simply adorable in this episode, and it was cute to see Ozzie interact with her and the little boy. 222: The Runaways 1/7/1959 Ozzie returns home to find 2 small children [a brother & sister] hiding in the backseat of his car. They are running away from home to Alaska. He doesn't know where they came from as he made several stops while he was out. Ice cream stop, donut stop and the bowling alley, among others. Very cute as he tells several different people that he had a ''beer'' while he was out and then immediately corrects himself each time as it being ''well, root beer''. The little kids are adorable, but the little girl, Katie [Katie Sweet] steals the show as Harriet and later a policeman try to get information from her. Harriet: I bet you don't know where you live Katie: Yes, I do Harriet: Where? Katie: At my house Policeman: Do you know your daddy's name? Katie: Yes Policeman: What is it? Katie: Daddy Ozzie sings, and Ricky sings and then Katie sings. Great episode. |

She was adorable and a great little actrss to be so young. The little boy looked a lot like a child on Donna Reed for a few episodes. I believe his character was named David Manning. I'm not sure if it was the same actor though.
