Default MAD Magazine

In the mid 70s, I was a fan of MAD Magazine (though being a pre-teen, couldn't afford them all!).

A few issues after they satirized RHODA ("Rhota") in 1976, they spoofed PHYLLIS ("Phoolish"). Does anyone remember this issue?Does anyone know if it's available on-line anywhere? I still regret not buying all the issues in the 70's!

They also spoofed MARY TYLER MOORE ("Mary Taylor-Made") and LOU GRANT ("Lou Grunt") as well.

Well, if ever a character was made for a MAD parody, it would be Phyllis!!

I totally agree - this was perfect for MAD.

I wish someone had the magazine and could scan it for us - I would love to see it again, and read the spoof again. I was about 12 years old and read the spoof at the drugstore news-stand. I should have forked over the 35 cents and bought it, but I probably bought a candy bar instead.

I had the original magazines for those parodies years ago, but I am pretty sure they are long gone (unless my mom still has them in her basement or something)

I had the original version of the Mad Magazine "Totally Mad" CD-ROM set - which had the entire series up to 1998, but the entire thing was scanned into PDF files, so there wouldn't be an easy way to scan the thing & upload it, you might be able to pick up one of those sets CHEAP (last time i saw them they were like $10), or they have a newer version "Absolutely Mad" on DVD for $30 - $50

For anyone who is inetersted, check out mtmshow.com

It's an excellent site, that is sadly no longer updated.

I donated the MAD magazines in question, and you can see the first pages for "Rhodent" and "Phoolish" in the section marked "Odd Findings".

Honestly, I don't think that either parody was very well done, but they are still fun. "Phoolish" came too early in the spin-off's run, to really skewer the show...although they did well enough!

Thank you so much for this info! Unfortuanately, they don't have all the pages posted - just the first page. I would love to read the rest of "Phoolish"!

I remember having the issue w/ "Phoolish", and I may still have it somewhere. I do remember that Phoolish was kicked out of the building where she worked (literally) by Julie and Leo (I forget their satire names.) after putting windows and lights in the darkroom, causing pictures for a client to be ruined. Phoolish says "I thought this sort of thing only happens in cartoons!", and Julie says "I thought YOUR sort of thing only happens in cartoons!". Near the end she runs into her in-laws "Tawdry" and "Yawnathan", as well as her husband Lars, who had faked his own death to get away from her. It was pretty funny, but as someone said it was early in the show's run, so it included nothing about her 2nd season job on the SF Board of Supervisors.

I remember the "Mary Tailor Made" spoof, in which Mary is shown constantly wearing new, different outfits.

I would love to see that whole satire from "Phoolish"! It sounds great...maybe there's a way where somehow it can be scanned/shared on one of the sites! It would be great if MAD somehow at all their satires (especially from the 70s and 80s - before the magazine went downhill) on their website.

As for "Mary Tyler Moore" - that spoof was called "Mary Tailor-Made" and is still available in the MAD special issue "MAD About the Seventies" which came out about seven years ago (I believe it is still available at booksellers and still in print). Yes, in just about every scene she changes her wardrobe (very funny!).
