Chinese Villagers disrupt Live Action 'Mulan' Film Shoot
SHANGHAI -- Shooting was held up for two days on Hong Kong helmer Jingle Ma's remake of the Chinese tale "Mulan," after villagers took revenge for an earlier film shoot they allege left town without paying the bills.
Villagers in Yixian, in China's Hebei Province, stood in front of the cameras whenever they started rolling, disrupting the shoot, according to the China Film website. Pic stars Chen Kun and Zhao Wei. Disney's toon version of the story about legendary warrior princess Hua Mulan was a big hit internationally in 1998, but only a qualified success in China, where there has long been a feeling that this movie should be done by a local helmer with local stars.
