Devo, the flower pot hat wearing post-punk band of the 1980s, is cracking the whip for the first time in 29 years, finishing its first studio album since 1990, according to Reuters. The album, still untitled, is expected out in the fall.

DEVO were not a "punk" band, and though they were one of the most influential new wave bands, their music and message was a little deeper than
just for being part of trends and making hits. Their message was that popular culture was in a state of de-evolution, that everything had peaked in the mid-70's when they began and was regressing backwards. Perfection was being inverted. Most people did not catch the point behind the "flower pot hats" and uniforms. It was part of a theatrical schtick of retro trash culture and sci-fi themes.

Actually, it makes sense that DEVO is coming back, seeing that everyone is into "retro" culture, and DEVO was all about being retro and "regressing". The whole new wave thing was about returning rock back to its simpler roots in time in the 70's when everyone was doing "bloated" and complex prog rock.

i have always loved DEVO - I always thought of them as post-punk new wave, but they are just in a class of their own.
