Default Vicki Lawrence & Carol Burnett

I was thinking the other day with both Betty White and Rue McClanahan being on Mama's Family, I'm surprised that Vicki Lawrence and Carol Burnett never made an appearnce on Golden Girls.

I could have seen them playing relatives or in fact, I could have seen Carol playing Trudy--Dorothy's high school friend in the episode "Til Death Do Us Volley." At any rate, Vicki and Carol would have been great guests on the show. Ken Berry guest starred as an ex-love of Rose's in the last season I think it was.

Was Carol Burnett a regular on "Mamma's Family"? I do not remember that. If she was, what part did she play? On a different topic, is anyone here a fan of "Mad About You"? I am crazy about it! If you watch the show, you know that, towards the end of the series, Carol started playing the mother of Helen Hunt's character. For the longest time, I have been trying to stimulate some conversation on the page of that show and have not had a whole lot of success! After I finish here, I will be heading over there to tell my buddies about this post!

Carol was a semi-regular on Mama's Family's run on NBC playing Mama's daughter Eunice Higgins. She did not appear on the syndicated episodes starting in the Fall of 1986. Mama's Family began as a sketch on the Carol Burnett Show.

Cool

And Harvey Korman played Eunice's husband Ed Higgins.

He guest starred as Thor Anderson, an old boyfriend of Rose's in 1991, which was during the 7th and final season.

Also, nobody from Maude or the principle cast of Mary Tyler Moore appeared in GG. However Harvey Korman and Tim Conway (from Carol Burnett) appear in Golden Palace, and several MTM supporting castmembers, Nancy Walker, Harold Gould, Pricilla Morrill and Nanette Fabarey all show up on the show at some point.

I'm also surprised that Carol Burnett never made an appearance on the syndicated Mama's Family. Betty White did in 1986 as Ellen. It really showed what a great actress she is--playing dimwitted Rose on Golden Girls and then seeing her once again play the snooty Ellen Harper Jackson on Mama's Family.

I'm not. Once Mama's Family was in syndication, Carol wanted nothing to do with anyone connected with her ex-husband Joe Hamilton, what with their then-divorce being such a nasty affair (I know, it's hard to imagine Carol involved with anything "nasty"). One day in 1985 or 1986 Carol called up Vicki and said "I was thinking, wouldn't it be fun to put together a little show with the Family characters?", but Vicki told her she had just signed with Joe to do Mama's Family in syndication. It got very awkward then and Carol wrapped up the phone quickly. Vicki talks about this in her book "The True-Life Adventures of Miss Fireball".
