I never got that....doesn't a NYC police officer (wasn't he a captain or Lt?) make pretty good money? Also, Amy was working in the public relations field I think..but she was working. Ok, maybe Ray earned more, but couldnt' they move into a one bedroom or even a studio since they didn't have any kids? I grew up in NY and I know it's expensive but there are some pockets of Long Island and Queens where it's affordable. Oh well...it's just a show...it just annoyed me..I would live in a subway car before I would live with Marie!

In the episode where Frank and Marie are kicked out of the nursing home, they discussed moving back into Amy's old apt., but it was already re-rented. At that point Marie offered to let them live with them...and Robert went ballistic. Amy talked him into it though.
You would have thought that would be temporary, for the reasons you described, but it lasted for the whole (shortened) last season. Maybe if the show had gone on, and logical things happened--like Amy and Robert starting a family--they would have moved out. |

Just a bit of a prelude to steeva's answer, Frank and Marie had signed up to live in a retirement home, so when they did, Amy and Robert moved into their old home across the street from Ray and Debra because they didn't want to sell it. It was good for them because they were saving for their own place.
Then Frank and Marie got the boot from the retirement villa and had to move back to their old place - and that's what put the four of them together in there. I think it was actually Robert's place originally, and Amy moved in with him, but at any rate, yes, it had been re-rented. |

It was hilarious too when Frank and Marie came back. Marie pretty much immediately started talking about things Robert and Amy had changed within the house. Of course they had no way of knowing that the folks would return and take over again. Really interesting episodes.
