Default Injured good Samaritan ticketed for jaywalking

35 mins agoDENVER – A good Samaritan who helped push three people out of the path of a pickup truck before being struck and injured has gotten a strange reward for his good deed: A jaywalking ticket.

Family members said 58-year-old bus driver Jim Moffett and another man were helping two elderly women cross a busy Denver street in a snowstorm when he was hit Friday night.

Moffett suffered bleeding in the brain, broken bones, a dislocated shoulder and a possible ruptured spleen. He was in serious but stable condition Wednesday.

The Colorado State Patrol issued the citation. Trooper Ryan Sullivan said that despite Moffett's intentions, jaywalking contributed to the accident.

Moffett had been driving his bus when the two women got off. In the interest of safety, he got out and, together with another passenger, helped the ladies cross.

Moffett's stepson, Ken McDonald, said the driver of the pickup plowed into his stepfather, but not before Moffett pushed the two women out of the way.

When he awoke in intensive care, he learned of the ticket. "His reaction was dazed and confused. I was a little angry," said McDonald.

The other man also was cited for jaywalking, while the pickup driver was cited with careless driving that led to injury. Sullivan said the two elderly women haven't been cited but the investigation

He was jaywalking, so technically he did break the law. But I think he still
should have been recognized for his heroic deed.

Sometimes it does not seem to pay at all to be the good Samaritan.
Remember what happened to Richard Jewel ( I believe that is now his name is spelt)--for reporting the bomb packaging associated with the Olympic incident so very long ago? What they did to him almost ruined his life; accusing him of something he did not do, and not letting up with their onslaught.

If it is your nature to help people in dire need, then even such things as the "Jewel incident" would not keep you from rescuing those in danger---even if you have to go through hell for it afterwards.
But someone with an extremely "analitical mind" might just decide to ignore those in peril--rather than be punished for "good intentions followed through by good deeds".

Sad, but true.

It's crap like this that makes me very cynical about society in general and laws in particular. You save two lives, yet you youself get a ticket. What's next - being arrested for disorderly conduct after breaking up a fight?

That guy shouldn't be charged with anything at all. No wonder people don't help those in need anymore. If you don't get sued for something, you get arrested

Are you saying he was not jaywalking? Are you saying traffic laws should
not be enforced?

Oh for God's sake, What if the man had stood-by and done nothing? No matter what the situation, the law is always right according to you and in this man's case it was damned if you do and damned if you don't.

What is your personal anger toward me? I just express my honest opinion on
here and you shout me down for it. I am not saying the man was not a hero,
I am just saying he did technically violate the law and I can see him being
ticketed for it even if I don't personally agree(which in this case I don't)

First of all, I'm not angry at you. It's just that this man performed a heroic deed and instead of being commended he got condemned and just because he was jaywalking while doing it, You see it from the side of the law. There are reasonable times when situations allow for laws to be broken and this was one of them.

Second, I did not shout you down, Do you see all caps in my post?

I'm not saying that. I'm just saying that under the circumstances like this, the rules should be bended. Good grief...
