Default Laptop in your lap causes cancer?!?!

Some people were bugging me about this the other day...
Whenever I am on the computer (which is quite often) I sit with my laptop in my lap. Apparently, there is a type of electromagnetic radiation that escapes from the battery of any computer that could cause cancer to reproductive organs (from being in your lap). I've been reading up on this, and it is very similar to the claims that extensive cell phone use could cause brain cancer.

I'm just curious what you guys think of this. Ridiculous?... or not?

RobyRob will probably know. I haven't heard anything about that, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I know you shouldn't keep a cell phone close to you - even in your pocket. I always use a bluetooth with mine. Heard about too many brain tumours caused by them - and I already have one - don't need it to get worse!!

Is there anything out there that is not going to harm or kill us?

well i don't know about cancer, but the idea of a hot battery in your lap doesn't sound like the best idea.

...aside from that, there is a lot of heat coming from the bottom of your laptop which could burn you, and there are vents underneath that are essential for cooling - so if you are going to put it on your lap, you should look at getting something like one of these:

cushtop stand - cooler - other ideas

I don't know how much radiation the batteries give off, but they could be potentially dangerous, I dont like the sound of radiation, I wouldn't want to be sticking my lap close to any microwave ovens either.

Actually, after I posted this evening I saw an ad for the new Mac laptop that's "green". They mention mercury content in other laptops among other things.

And I would think even if there were the smallest amount of radiation emitted, I wouldn't want that in contact near my reproductive stuff for very long!

I know as kids we were told not to sit too close to the t.v. and it was because of radiation.

I usually sit with my laptop on my lap as well, but after reading this thread, I think I'm going to stop, just to be on the safe side. A hot battery near a guys groing can't be a good thing no matter how you look at it.

True, that would suck!! Although it wouldn't affect me much in the romantic area, considering I haven't had much luck in that area lately.

Too much information, I know, I just couldn't resist.
