Lack of Continuity (family members) - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

The one thing I hated about the Golden Girls is the lack of continuity especially regarding family members. I know different actors are brought in because the original is unavailable, but the replacement never looks anything like the original. The original Rebecca Devereox was overweight, then a tall thin girl replaced her and the 2 Kirstin Nylands looked nothing alike.
Other inconsistancies:

Rose refers to her mothers grave in one episode and in another episode, her mother Alma comes to visit. They never refer to her mother passing away.

When Blanches grandson comes to visit (whose about 16) she's talking to his mother Janet on the phone, and later in the series Janet appears with a little girl and Janet looks like she's about 28. What was she 12 when David was born?

When Big Daddy comes to town, he announces he sold the family home in Atlanta, and later in the series when he dies Blanche is in the home with Virginia. And where was Charmaine and Clayton, and his second wife Margaret?

Who are all of Blaches children? Rebecca, Janet, Matthew, Bif, Doug and Skippy? Do they all really exist?

Blanches middle name in one episode is Elizabeth and in another her Mammy calls her Blanche Marie Hollingsworth.

Theres so many can you think of others?

Even though this is not in regards to family members, I am going to post it here anyway. In one episode Rose was the Valor Dictorian of St. Olif High School. In a later episode, she was sick during the end of her senior year and thus never graduated! She earned her GED with the help of Dorothy.

Golden Girls was a great show, but continuity was NOT one of its strong suits.

Kinda like in one of the flashbacks where Blanche first meets Rose, and she owns a cat named Mr. Peepers, but then in the episode where she gets hooked on back pain pills, we find out that she is allergic to cats and never had one? Hmmm...

I will aggree that there are tons of controdicting episodes of this series! There are a lot of shows that I have watched in which there were inconsistancies at one point or another. However, according to my experiences, the series that was the worst in terms of continuaty is the "Flintstones". What do people here make of that one?

The continuity of this show is so bad that it's funny, (and of course it doesn't in any way kill the love I have for it) but the one that ALWAYS got me was this: Stan and Dorothy had to get married because Dorothy got pregnant. Dorothy and Stan were married for 38 years and were divorced for a couple of years before the show started. Wouldn't that have made Michael, at the very least, 40 years old? Yet he seemed to be late 20s/early 30s.

I have noticed some of the inconsistiences on the show. But a lot of shows have contiuity problems. I think a lot of ABC shows like Full House, Family Matters and Boy Meets World had a lot more contiuity issues.

This isn't really family related, but in the episode where the girls care for baby Emily after the marathon, and then the parents don't show up, and we find out at the end the reason for this is that the wife had triplets. How is that possible? Emily looked about 5-6 months...??? The timing just doesn't make sense.

I know exactly what you mean. This show had many continuity errors.

The BIGGEST FLUB UP in the series to me is when Rose meets her natural father at the hospital and tells Dorothy and Blanche that Gunter and Alma NYLUND were here adopted parents--her married name was Nylund--her maiden name was Lindstrom. I can't believe no one on the show--including Betty White caught that mistake!!

Other errors I have noticed:

When Sophia's sister Angela visits, it is mention they are the only two left of the original family, yet later her brother Angelo visits later in the series.

It never made sense that Blanche would have had sons--Matthew, Biff, Doug, and Skippy in addition to daughters Rebecca and Janet--she didn't seem like someone that would have six children. Biff, Doug, and Skippy were just mentioned in that one episode. Matthew did make an appearance on Golden Palace and I think he was a CPA like she mentioned he was on Golden Girls (wow they actually got something right).

In the episode Transplant, where her sister needs a kidney, Blanche says Virginia is the only family she's got and that she didn't count her sister Charmagne, yet later her brother Clayton is introduced plus Big Daddy visits.

Also if you recall that Blanche's father sold their house Twin Oaks in Atlanta to become a country singer. Yet when he passes away, they show the house in Atlanta with Blanche telling Dorothy stories about the place she grew up in.

Rose acts like she never had a son and that her only kids were Bridget and Kierston. On a Mother's Day episode she is waiting for a call from Charlie Jr...it is the only time I ever remember her mentioning him.

One episode error I remember is when they are all piling in Sophia's bed because the heat is out and Blanche says her bed has never been so cold--especially on a Saturday night, but later Dorothy (a substitute teacher) is yelling at everyone to go to bed because she has to go to work early in the morning--on a Sunday morning??

Oh you're right. So that means Rose had a total of 5 children??--Kierston, Bridget, Jonella, Adam, and Charlie Jr??

At least they kept Sophia's kids straight--always Dorothy, Phil, and Gloria and Dorothy only had Kate and Michael although Kate should have been at least 38 years old since Dorothy was pregnant when she got married. It was mentioned Michael was 23 when he married that 44 year old woman. That's quite an age gap between kids!

One thing that I would be very interested in knowing is whether anyone reading this post is or ever was a fan of the eighties series known as "Gimme a Break!" It was one of my favorites! One thing about this sereis is that it was nowhere near as bad as the "Golden Girls" or the "Flintstones" in tersm of continuity errors. However, between the first season and the third season, I would say that they, in a sense, reverted from a more liberal to a more conservative point of view. Less then fifteen minutes ago, I started a thread on that show's page pointing out this reality. I gave this thread the name, "The Golden Girls" because it was this thread that gave me the idea. I would be very interested in what any of you think of it!

I remember watching that episode a few years ago with my mom and my mom right away said it didn't make sense at all.

Well with the Flintstones I know Wilma's maiden name was Wilma Pebble when she went to her class reunion, then later in the series, Wilma's mother is called Mrs. Flaghoople. She must have had a second husband, after Wilma's father.

The last poster has done a very good job of pointing out an inconsistancy on the "Flintstones"! There were also controdicting stories regarding, when and if Fred graduated high school, how Fred and Barney became friends, how long Fred and Wilma had been married and even when the first time that Fred went fishing was! It is because of this that I would say that this is one of the few sereis that outdoes the "Golden Girls" in terms of continuity errors.
