To me, the differences between these four similar words are.....
Racism would be for example, "We Alians are better than the Hurys(I made up these races, to show an example, without putting a real race) Stereotyping would be, "All Hurys steal cars. And rob houses. Lock up your cars and your valuables when Hurys are around." Prejudice would be, "I don't like the Hurys. They are all thieves(VERY similar to stereotyping) Discrimination would be, "I am NOT hiring a Hury to be my employee. They might steal from the workplace." |

To me, racism, is just pure evil--an act of the will. No one can claim ignorance on this. iow, "I hate you simply because you're (whatever)"
Stereotypes: I believe stereotypes do start with some element of truth. But most people, I think, that recognize stereotypes know that they are exaggerations and shouldn't be used to fuel racist attitudes, and that because not everyone fits the stereotype, everyone unfortunately suffers by being categorized. (The truth: Not all Italian-Americans are members of the Mafia; not all blacks are good at sports or music; not all Asians are 'smart', not all English people have bad teeth, etc., etc.) I believe that Prejudice and Discrimination, (both wrong) can be either on a par with racism or direct byproducts of it--they are ways that racism is shown, or lived out. All subtle differences, but as another poster has indicated--are all wrong and should be eradicated from society. |
