The Inheritance

I really enjoyed this episode. Charles is told by a lawyer that he inherited a large sum of money from a rich uncle he didn't know. He knows it will take time to settle the estate and doesn't want to spend any money. The people around him started making plans for his money. The preacher asks for a new church organ. The local store insist the entire family buy fancy clothes for a newspaper article, which was another story in itself.

The man Charles works for wants him to buy his business. His friend gets weird, as does most of the town. When the inheritance falls through, Charles almost loses his farm from overextending his credit. An auction is held, and the town's people pull through for the Ingall's family. It ends well. As the preacher told Charles, that it wasn't he who changed, it was those around him. It was a nice message show, like so many episodes. It's what greed and money can do to some people. It shows how nice you're treated if you have money. A heartwarming episode.

That's one of my favorite episodes.

I love the way the town helps out at the end by "fixing" the auction. A penny for this, a penny for that. Or more often, two cents.


And Mrs. Oleson talking about Charle's "Uncle rich".

All I can tell you is that Jonathan Garvey was in it, still living in Walnut Grove, if that gives you any idea of when it took place.

Little House on the Prairie: The Inheritance

The Ingallses learn they are about to inherit a fortune when a wealthy relative dies. Charles and Caroline are on cloud nine, and soon make plans to invest their fortune.

Everyone hears about the Ingalls' good fortune, and the Garveys, Dr. Baker ... everyone soon want to give advice on how to spend the money. Charles decides to take their advice, purchasing livestock and modern farm equipment from the Mercantile on credit.

There's just one teeny, tiny problem, however. The funds arrive, and Caroline joyfully waits in anticipation as Charles opens the box. Their moods change 180 degrees when they discover the money is Confederate currency. Worthless Confederate currency, even more worthless than the paper it's printed on.

Mrs. Oleson, who has been skeptical about the Ingalls' wealth all along, finds out that the Ingalls cannot afford all their purchases after all. Nels tries to work out a payment plan with the Ingalls, but pushy Mrs. Oleson wants to recoup her losses now. She pushes Nels into a corner and makes him move forward with her plan to foreclose on the Ingallses farm and drive her rivals out of Hero Township.

But then the Ingallses learn they have some true friends working on their side. Dr. Baker, Lars Hanson, Rev. Alden and Jonathan Garvey are the only ones to show up for auction. Over Mrs. Oleson's strong objections, they purchase the Ingalls' land and farm equipment for just pennies. Her last-ditch attempt to value the farm deed at $400 is quickly overruled, as Jonathan reminds the auctioneer that he must accept the first bid.

And Nels, well, without his wife's knowledge, he's gone to Walnut Grove's main intersection to tell auction-goers the sale had ended. Jonathan and the others tell Charles that they have no deadline to pay them back and there is no interest.

Mrs. Oleson was the one hyperventilating over their coming fortune, eagerly extending them credit, and even sending for that newspaper guy to do a story on their "rags to riches" story.

Doesn't sound like someone who is "skeptical" about their wealth.
I never got that vibe from her at least.


If she was supposed to be skeptical, then Katherine Macgregor didn't play her part very well, and I know that can't be true.

If she was supposed to be skeptical, then Katherine Macgregor didn't play her part very well, and I know that can't be true.

I thought the same thing about it. She was spending their money before they even had it.

The church wanted an organ and the school wanted books. Harriet called Late Uncle"Ned Uncle Rich. The girls got new clothes. I hated it when Andew Garvey said Laura looked like Nellie Olsen in the dress.She did not!
