I got my first last night
Around 2:30AM I was listening to music and reading, and there was a knock on my door, and it was the police. I didnt think my music was too loud, but for some reason I knew thats why he was there. Apperently somebody upstairs was complaining about the music. Again I didnt think it was that loud, but I guess the walls at my pad arent as thick as I thought they were, so I agreed to turn the music off. I didnt get too upset, but whomever complained could have came down and talked to me, I would have been reasonable. I didnt see the need to involve the police. |

A couple of years ago I was staying with my cousin and her family. It was a couple of nights before her wedding and so we had a little party and a neighor called the police on us for having a window open and having a stereo own. The stereo wasn't too loud. After the police left we closed the windows and turned off the stero and spent the rest of the night playing drinking games and watching movies.

Ha ha! This thread brings back memories.
We used to get them all the time when my brothers and I used to jam out in the garage.

Personally, I never have. I tend to wear headphones after hours.

It's ridiculous that they called the police on you. They definitely should have talked to you first. The police should be a last resort. I'm glad they felt the police didn't have anything better to do than to tell someone that they were playing music too loud.

I kinda did have a noise complaint but I didn't think it was too loud and it was from my 8 year old neighbor. I think she just wanted to bug me. That neighbor has since moved away years ago.
I think maybe the neighbor just didn't feel comfortable going downstairs to complain and maybe they didn't know how you'd react to it. |

I think it was very inappropriate and poor etiquette for your neighbor to call the police without talking to you first. I'm sensitive to noise but I always use this series of remedies:
1-Leave a note under the neighbors door (and make a photocopy of it), handwritten and polite. Or I call them if I have their number. If I'm friendly with them I'll knock on the door. This ususally works 90% of the time. Most people are considerate but just aren't aware they're creating a disturbance. 2-If this doesn't work, I'll try 1 or 2 more contacts. After that, I call the landlord and send them certified letter detailing what has happened, attaching documentation. 3- I might call the police. But not after at least 2 or 3 efforts with the neighbor. And I'd file a written complaint so I had good documentation. |

I do but my stereo is on the other side of the room, and I was sitting on my bed at the time. Normally I dont play music that late, but I couldnt sleep and I really didnt think it was that loud. |

I'm having this problem now, I have a neighbor that blasts his music all the time. I've went over and asked him nicely to turn it down, and he usually complies. The next night it's blasting again, i haven't called the police yet, but I'm very close to doing it.

Some drunken idiot above me, who made TONS of noise arguing with his girlfriend repeatedly, had the nerve to come to my door and complain about me playing bass "too loud" (even though I had the volume at 1 on my amp), which could be heard through the floor. He threatened to call the police at times where I would come home and relax by playing bass for a few minutes after 10:PM, not trying to bother anyone, but he obviously had issues. I never spoke to this guy before, but I didn't realize until later that he was drunk and obnoxious. Anything could have set this guy off. It was just my way to unwind after work, but I wasn't trying to disturb anyone. Sometimes I get a little too intimidated to play bass. That was at my last apartment before I moved a few weeks later in December.

I Agree With You!!

I agree with you completely; why involve the police on this? This person could've just come downstairs to your place, and ask you nicely to turn down your music. He/She went overboard for something like this; a situation that could've been dealt with between just the two of you in a mature manner. |
