Sad Continential commuter plane crashes in Buffalo, NY; 49 killed

49 killed as plane crashes into Clarence Center home

Forty-nine people reportedly died when an aircraft identified as a Continental Airlines flight crashed into a house in Clarence Center shortly after 10 p.m. last night, starting a huge fire which poured thick smoke throughout the hamlet.

Unconfirmed reports from a source at Buffalo Niagara International Airport said that the dead included 44 passengers, four crew members and a person on the ground.

County Executive Chris Collins said that there may have been as many as 50 people aboard the plane and crew members had reported mechanical problems as they approached Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Several injured people were taken from the scene to Erie County Medical Center for treatment.

Television reports said the crash site was 6050 Long St., not far from the Clarence Center Fire Hall on Clarence Center Road. Police said that one man was in the residence at the time of the crash.

Cool

Just awful. My sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives.

I am watching it now on Fox News. At first, I thought it was about the fires in Australia because I saw flames, then I read where it is a plane crash. That is the last thing we need... a plane crash. If only the outcome was like the plane that had to land in the Hudson River where no one was killed.

Very very sad and I feel for the poor relatives.

(I so HATE flying, I will only go on a plane in an absolute emergency - the last time I was on a plane was 4 and a half yrs. ago - as far as I'm concerned, the less the better. And I know statistically they're the safest form of travel, but I still HATE flying.)

Beverly Eckert, who lost her husband on 9/11, is among the victims of the Buffalo plane crash.

I heard about that. So ironic and sad.

I can't imagine the terrifying experience all of those people went through. RIP

This was just horrible. First to hear of the crash and then the horrible irony of the 9/11 widow and how she was traveling to her husband's hometown to celebrate what would have been his 58th birthday. Then to hear of a beloved Toronto businessman being killed on board (he took an earlier flight to get home to see his family sooner).

The plane was built in Toronto by Bombardier and one of my old school friends works there and was interviewed on the news about it. They're all feeling horrible about it and want to know what went wrong.

Sounds to me like something went wrong with the de-icers on the wings. Meanwhile because those planes are built in Canada for cold and extreme cold conditions, they can't figure out why that would happen.

I know it's the main reason I hate having to fly in the winter.
