Default Laurie Metcalf as Jackie

Laurie's portrayal of Jackie is probably the best acting on any television sitcom, ever. And yes, I'm including Lucy.

Laurie Metcalf is just amazing. You will never see a better actress.

Agree? Disagree? Comments?

I agree with you... I thought Metcalf's portrayal of Jackie was brilliant, and really nuanced. Some say she got weird in the later seasons, but that was due to the writing. I would say seasons 3-6 she was absolutely unstoppable in terms of likeability and talent. LOVED HER. There's a reason she won 3 emmys in a row.

Roseanne explains in Season 4 that Jackie's character was actually based on Barney Fife from the "Andy Griffth Show" and said that Laurie Metcalf even met with Don Knots to study his character and how to do that for the show.

I liked Jackie up until the last couple of years of 'Roseanne', when she became a blooming idiot.

Default Poor Laurie

I like her too (until seasons 8 and 9). I thought she was little more than a buffoon at the end. And the Don Knotts deal was dumb and unfunny. I do think she's very talented, though, and I feel very, very bad about what happened to her face.

I agree that it is Seasons 8 and 9 that her character just loses it's appeal and becomes WAY too crazy for my liking. Laurie Metcalf though is a very talented actress but I have to ask, what happened to her face? Anyway, I really have liked her on the Big Bang Theory playing Sheldon's mother. She is always hiliarous on there.

Laurie Metcalfe was very funny and talented on Roseanne, but toward the end of the series, her character did become a bumbling clown.

As great as "Jackie" was, she doesn't even compare to Lucy Ricardo/Lucielle Ball. Lucy was the greatest female comidienne of all time. There will never be another like her. She was truly awesome. To even compare "Jackie" to Lucy is ridiculous.

Actually, maybe nothing did happen to her face. I just always assumed she was in her fifties. Someone posted a picture and she looks closer to 70. That being the case, i'm not as frightened by her appearance.

^^^ Laurie does not look like she's 70, you loony! She looks like a normal 57 year old woman, for pity's sake! Not everybody gets The Lifestyle Lift!

Ignore the troll.

Anyway, Laurie's acting has always been superb in pretty much everything she does. I agree her character toward the end of Roseanne, though, was too wacky and embarrassingly over the top. I don't know if that was her intentions, Roseanne's, the crews, or all three, but the entire decision was wrong (as were most decisions from that point in the series).

I loved the show up until they won the lotto money. By then the show was just horrible and not even watchable.

Jackie was Looney Tunes in the end. I liked the early show 80's Jackie better. As the years progressed, she was just out there. She was still funny, though. She was too crazy. I was like "calm down, lady!"

I loved Jackie in the first few seasons but for me, the entire second half of the series (at least the last four seasons) she was nearly certifiable. That's no fault of Laurie Metcalf, of course...someone must have thought it would be funny to have the most grounded character on the show turn koo koo for Cocoa Puffs, making terrible decisions, screaming and yelling, acting like she's four years old.

Honestly, it was embarrassing to watch.
