I feel like I'll never be able to become what I want to be in life. I've told very few people what I really want to do because some of them have laughed at me and thought it was a joke. I know most people say "You can do anything you set your mind to" but I come from a small town, I've only taken a few college classes and I make $15 a day or less waiting tables. I'm just so hurt and discouraged because I want this SO BAD and I have no idea how I'll ever make it.

I know how you feel... maybe a little bit. I mean, I'm not sure what exactly you want so badly in life that you don't feel like you can tell many people, but I do know that if someone laughs at your dreams and aspirations, they aren't worth your time. I know what it's like to work for minimum wage and take basic community college classes and not own your own car, or your own place, or really your own anything! I tend to feel a bit cagey from time to time. I feel trapped and like I'll never become what I want (College Music Professor). But, I just try to set small goals for myself... the goal to get the Associate Degree (not focus so much on the Bachelor's or Master's that I'll have to get to work in any college, ugh.) Something that really helps me, though, is to look back on all the things I accomplished that I thought would have killed me: learning to drive, working an actual job, attending a public college campus after an entire life of sheltered homeschooling... I mean, these are HUGE things for me... and I think if you look hard enough, you'll find that you have accomplished a great deal. And I know what you must be thinking... Hey, beautifuldreamer is just a newbie, it's not like she really knows anyone here and you are right... but I can tell by your words in your posts that you are a special lady, Lauren, and you can achieve anything you want if you believe in yourself.

Don't give up. A lot of people do give it up but keep encouraging yourself. People who laugh at your dreams or goals usally don't have one themselves.

I'm very sorry you are feeling this way, Lauren.
Don't give up on your dreams though. You are still very young and can make a lot out of your life.

But hey...I can still acheive it! |

I have sort of feel the same way you do. A few years ago a lot of people including family tried to discourage me from pursuing law school and a business law career. I kept encouraging myself and finding ways to save money for living expenses and ways to pay for law school. I will be starting law school in the fall and I have managed well. Keep going with your goals whatever they may be. Explore different opportunties.

a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, they say. you're still young. you may not have the resources you need to achieve your dreams now, but that may change in the future. i know that phrases like "don't give up" sound cliche and meaningless, but i've learned how important they are to live by when it comes to achieving what you want. if you go for your goals, you could end up amazing yourself. don't get discouraged by remarks from others...they have no idea what you could be capable of with more practice. if you encounter any failures along the way, remember that it's normal and don't think of it as the end. this is crucial to remember. think of it as room for improvement and keep going. patience is vital. you have to believe in yourself and acknowledge that you are capable of doing whatever it is you want to do.

I know the feeling all too well. You have probably heard this before, but whatever it is you want to do, I say go for it, and screw what anybody else has to say. Its your life, not theirs. |

What is your goal, anway? Since I assume you don't want to post it here, e-mail or P.M. me. (I assure you, I won't laugh. ) |

Lauren, you're a smart, witty young lady with a great personality. You can be whatever you want. You lack the self-confidence. Conquer that, find your niche, and it's yours for the taking, all of it, whatever you want (except Wayne Rogers).

Totally agree! When to actually talk to Lauren, she's even sweeter, funnier and smarter than she appear on SO (hope that doesn't come across as a put down because it isn't of course). And Lauren, if Wayne truly is your goal (and you're not kidding) there's no reason you couldn't meet him at some point. Marriage could be a stretch tho.
