Question Question for people who live outside the US...

Im curious about life in other countries. If you live outside of the US what is the average cost of living where you live? Also if an american would move to your country would they have trouble blending in? Any sort of prejudice towards americans there?

Canada's probably your easiest and safest bet there since Americans are very similar to us. Every company I've worked at has had Americans working there.

And not to put down the U.S. at all, but the standard of living is slighty better here as well - not in all areas of course, we have our "depressed" regions like the Maritimes, but all in all, because of the healthcare system and certain social programs it's better. You can see for yourself when you google "top countries to live in" and Canada is usually very near the top.

Thanks for replying Cathy. Yeah I have done the research and Canada is always on that list at least 3 or 4 times. It is beautiful there too. Thanks for the info. Im just wondering how their economy is different from the US is it easier to earn a living there for the 'middle class' worker? Or is it pretty much the same as the US? Like what would be the average cost of living?

Well I was just reading the other day what it costs to live in New York City and the what my wage would have to be to have the same standard of living. Now of course, NYC is crazy compared to any other U.S. city as well, but I would have to be earning at least $20K to $25K more than I do here in order to have the same or a little less standard of living.

Our economy, while to a large degree is dependent on the U.S., at least this time around we're going to be better off than you guys. We're certainly not untouched - we're losing jobs right now like mad too, but our banking system is setup completely different and hasn't seen the crash like yours has. You can still get credit here. Actually many Canadians now are looking at investing in real estate in the U.S. believe it or not.

You can get a half decent, 2 bedroom apt. in the suburbs for around $900 a month. I'm a bit more spoiled and like ensuite washer/dryers and dishwashers so I would have to pay more like $1200 for a nicer apt. That could also have utilities included.
Right now, once I get back working again as an Executive Assistant, I'm renting a 3 bedroom townhouse, utilities not included and am paying $1275 a month.

And now that the economy has tanked, you can negotiate better deals with landlords (I did mine). Some apts. are even offering "move in" incentives like 42" plasma t.v.s.! If you've got a stable job right now in Canada, you're actually ahead of the game because prices are FINALLY coming in line with the U.S. because the U.S. is so desperate to keep profitable (mainly cars of course) but electronics as well.

For people in Mexico....

Why do you want to live in our country without a Green Card? Even Ricardo Montalban had a Green Card so he could get work in America!

Yah I don't get that myself. You don't see Canadians risking their lives to sneak into the U.S. (o.k. - maybe the odd one but there'd be a reason for it like an American sneaking into Canada).

Just do it the legal way so you don't have to constantly look over your shoulder.
