Why does Sophia look so different when she is first introduced and the first few episodes? She has different glasses and maybe a different hair-do, but something else seems different.

In the original episodes Estelle's own hair was powdered/colored white. Apparently the look wasn't what the producers were after, so she was given a wig to wear.

As for make-up/appearance, it was probably just the tweaking of things as the show got rolling.

She also looks much younger in each picture on the DVD box up top. Her wig is different, and again - no glasses, which is odd.

Estelle Getty had a facelift. Betty White (I think) mentioned it on one of the episode commentaries.
