Default "Bewitched" Is Eventually a Sad Story...

We see all the funny goings-on during the first eight years of Darrin and Samantha's marriage. However, eventually, Darrin is going to age and die. Samantha will still look young, though I assume she will eventually look older (since Endora looks like an old lady, sorry Agnes). Tabitha, being a witch will also live forever, along with Endora and Samantha but Adam will age and die, like his father.

I wonder what Samantha's life is like without Darrin alive. Would she return to her witchy ways? I mean, the only reason she restrained from using her powers was because of her love for Darrin. And then later on, her son would pass away. She's going to be a very depressed witch.

Sad, I know. But the thought came to me today, lol.

That's a good question. Samantha could've zapped herself into aging the mortal way, I suppose. I'm sure if Darrin was still alive, he and Sam would still be as much in love as ever. I'm sure the kids (and probably grandkids) would stop by to see them often. If Darrin was gone, maybe Sam would've gone back to the Cosmos with Serena. Who knows?

Uh, Adam was a warlock.....so he wasn't going to age and die in the everyday mortal way.

Besides, I think Samantha knew that this world was just a temporary place in the grand scheme of the Cosmos--she knew Darrin would live on in another realm and when the time was right, she would join him there. Clara was already there for one thing. No, she was never mentioned as dying on BW, but we all knew underlying that witches eventually die as well.

I thought Adam was a mortal, because on "Tabitha" he always tried to stop her from using her powers. He just came off to me as a guy without powers. Maybe they even said it, I'm not sure. I've not really watched the show much, it wasn't very good, lol.

There is the thing about if they're immortal, when do they look older. Because Endora looks like an old lady, Samantha looks like a young lady and Tabitha looks like a child. So at some point, they would have to change their looks to look older.

Tabitha didn't have the same coninuity as Bewitched. In Bewitched Adam is a Warlock, his powers aren't fully developed because Darrin is agains the useage of witchcraft. They could have had him as a bumbling warlock on Tabitha instead of a mortal, it would have made for better storylines.

Okay, thanks. I haven't watched a lot of Adam episodes of "Bewitched". I just assumed.

We will never know the full extent of what Adam's powers were to be like, because we never had that 9th season. I don't think Adam would have be hindered necessarily because Tabitha wasn't and she knew her dad didn't like the use of witchcraft either.

Yeah didn't Endora, Hagatha, and Enchantra come to determine if Adam was a warlock? Mean old busybodies, they're always butting in in Samantha, Darrin and Aunt Clara's business!

I've always assumed that witches are not immortal, since as has been mentioned, they do age. They couldn't live forever and get more skeletal and powdery and eventually turn to dust. Talk about depressing!

Perhaps the aging process goes super slowly when a witch reaches 18? I'd hate to be a witch in diapers for ten years or a gangly teenage witch with braces for twenty years!

You mentioned the sad element of the show. Something that has struck me: if Darrin and Samantha are only going to be married for about fifty years, why are all Samantha's relatives so obsessed with ending the relationship? They all should've butt out and dealt with it since Samantha would be single and look the same after such a short time in witch years.

Good points. I had always thought that Adam was a mortal like his father.

Thanks! I've also thought it would've been more interesting if, in the final seasons of the show, instead of redoing past plots (and whole episodes!), the writers would have explored the themes mentioned here. Perhaps the Witches Council was so determined to break up Samantha's marriage because they knew Darrin would eventually become ageless like the witches! Or the reverse, if Sam and Darrin were married for a long time, Samantha would start aging as a mortal. That would explain Endora's meddling!

There could have been lots of scripts written about the reactions of the Kravitzes, Larry Tate, and Darrin's parents to finding out about Samantha.

There were so many directions for the show to go. Or the movie version!

Good ideas. Frankly I never understood Darrin's opposition to Samantha using magic but I guess the writers wanted conflict and that was it.

I guess he married her thinking she was "normal", and then finds out she's a witch. In the very first episode, wasn't this when she told him? I thought they were on their honeymoon or something. Obviously he didn't know before hand. So if he didn't know, he's probably opposed to her using magic because he just wants a normal wife and family. But you are right, Bronson. It was just a way to add conflict to the mix. I guess they could have had him NOT be opposed to her using magic, but to be embarrassed and not want it used in public or around their friends and his colleagues.

Yes, Samantha told Darrin she was a witch on their wedding night.

No, Bewitched will not be a sad story. I have been giving this subject a lot of thought, and what I've come up with is this: If Samantha really loves Darrin, she will not watch him endure the pain of growing old while she stays young and immortal. That would be kind of...twisted if she did. Samantha also will not marry a warlock. Remember? She wants to live a "normal, mortal life." (Even though she still has to use her magic.) And she also will not let her children grow up watching their poor daddy age and make them fatherless, now will she?
Now think about this. Neither Endora, nor Maurice, nor anyone else in Sam's family will let Sam, Tabitha, or Adam age and die as mortals. They just won't! Besides, maybe Darrin will do sort of what Samantha did, and try adjust to being a warlock! Then the adventures will start all over again!
And think about the love. Bewitched is all about love and family sticking together. Somehow, Sam and Darrin will make it work. (They have been for almost 300 episodes, anyway!) They're inseparable! And remember this: love conquers all. Everything will be alright.
The end.
