Just read this and found it interesting and again it makes sense.
Like a lot of folks in this state, I have a job. I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit. In order to get that paycheck, I am required to pass a random urine test with which I have no problem. What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people Who don't have to pass a urine test. Shouldn't one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check Because I have to pass one to earn it for them? Please understand, I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet. I do, on the other hand, have a problem with helping someone sitting on their rear end, Doing drugs, while I work. . . Can you imagine how much money the state would save If people had to pass a urine test to get a public assistance check? I guess we could title that program, 'Urine or You're Out'. Harvey |

So true. With more and more employers requiring regular random drug testing for those who at least are willing to work for a living.
Now how 'bout the government do the same thing for welfare collectors - you will be subjected to random drug testing in order to still qualify. You will be made to show how you're trying your hardest to get back on your feet. I think you'd see a lot more of those jobs at McDonald's filled this way! |

You both make good points. If drug tests are required for getting a job, then drug tests should be required for those who apply for some sort of welfare assistance. Now I am not knocking welfare, because sadly a good majority of people who are on some sort of assistant are there because they need some help getting by.

It does make sense. I also believe that people who receive food stamps should only be allowed to buy the basics. I worked at the grocery store and you won't believe how many people on food stamps think expensive meats and junk food and stuff like that are neccessities.

Good point, but I have to admit that I would be tempted to buy steak and lobsters and such. |

I've heard of more people being on welfare and living with someone who had a good job, but they claim they're a single parent. The system can't check everyone unfortunately. To me, forget this direct depost b.s. - you need welfare or food stamps, you have to be subjected to periodic testing - sorry. I know they talk about dignity and all that, but times are tough and if people are going to abuse, then the honest ones shouldn't mind it. I wouldn't. |

AMEN SISTAH!!!!!!!! I see this abuse every single day and tell people food stamps needs to be regulated like the WIC program where they only can buy certain items according to nutritional needs. I see cartloads of cookies, cakes, pies, pizza, chips, cases of soda, gallons of that junk "faux juice" sugar water and of course t-bones, ribeyes, and Delmonico steaks. Where are the fruits, vegetables, whole grain products?? what's more is that kids should absolutely NOT BE ALLOWED to use the food stamp EBT card on their own. Parents simply allow their kids to come in and they come buy cokes and candy bars 3-4 times a day!!! AND JUST WHY AREN'T THEY IN SCHOOL????

There are people who do abuse food stamps, and then there are those who need it. Like I said earlier I would be tempted myself to get some junk food as well as fruits, salads etc.
Now that I am unemployed I see things somewhat differently. I haven applied for food stamps, but now that I will be getting less money. I dont know whats going to happen, I can barely afford groceries now. Time will tell.
