Im really proud of this show. I feel that James Komack chose a great setting for these characters, as they are reflected in a positive way.
I am from East L.A. (born and raised) and in the opening credits of the show; the exterior shots of the neighborhoods and parks are familiar to me. I know them very well because i grew up there. I can even imagine where the actual garage is! FYI: These places still exsist! It's funny because growing up in the 70's as young kid i did know a guy like Chico, We called him "Santos" and he was a big fan of The Doors and the Stones. He was a real Nice guy. he worked on Motorcycles and played Football with us in the street. All those wonderful memories, "Chico and the man" remind me of those times . take care. alex27 |

Welcome to the site! Santos sounds alot like CHico. I wonder if guys like him were the inspiration for Chico. That sounds like an interesting area to visit...

Do you know if some of the original graffiti (shown in the opening & closing credits) is still up? I kind of doubt it, but that would be awesome! There are so many people shown in the opening credits--I wonder what they're doing now! Like, I wonder if the bride they show is still married to whoever she was getting married to... I like the shot of the little toddler running down the sidewalk towards the pidgeons, (it's at the end of the opening credits) then he stumbles and gets back up... so cute! |

I too have wondered whatever happened to those folks. I figure the kids must be all grown up by now. That kid was cute. I also thought it was unusual how on CATM & another James Komack show Welcome Back Kotter, they never showed the characters in the opening or closing credits except for a brief bit in season 2 of CATM...

Karen, funny you should ask. A long time ago I got a call from the boy who fell forward on the openning credits. He asked me if I could send him an epside so he could have a copy of the openning credits. I never heard from him again. He told me a brief and interesting story about it a while back.

He would be in his 30's by now, I imagine (probably shot those scenes in '74, and he looked like he was about 2, maybe..). What did he say?

It was so lomg ago and brief that we spoke. He said that they asked his mother for permission to be filmed for the scene, and that he asked me for a copy of the openning of the show.
