I agree we have come so far but we still have a long way to go.

I think it should be against the law to be racist. If you are racist and show that in any way shape or form you will be put in prison.

No more "what race are you" in employment applications or goverment forms.

Luckily, here in Canada, it's been illegal to ask certain questions for jobs or government forms, and race is about number one. They also can't ask you about your marital status (now these are for job interviews), your sexual orientation, whether or not you have children, etc..

If anything, there is a clause where if you're of a visible minority you can check that off, and it actually works in your favour (as companies need to fulfill certain requirements, i.e. at least a certain percentage of workers must be of a visible minority and/or women).

Unfortunately, racism isn't something that can be totally cut out with individuals and can't be policed easily. Although I know of a couple of cases where racist vandals have defaced monuments or buildings with racist graffitti. The cops took it VERY seriously and still have rewards out for the culprits. They'll be charged with hate crimes, much more serious charges than for just graffitti writing.

It just sickens me in this day and age of supposed "enlightenment" and knowledge that some people still are racist towards others like they are.

Wow! Canada is starting to sound better and better. I wish I could just move up there but im sure the winters are brutal.

I know Martin Luther King Jr. would have been extremely proud of Barack Obama. I can't wait until tomorrow.

Yeah, I think he would be proud of Barack. I think he would also be sad as to how blacks still struggle and how some blacks do make other blacks look bad and don't take responsibilities for their actions. Now that being said, everybody should take responsibility for their actions, no matter what color or sexual orientation.

But we do have a long way to go but I think we will always have a struggle to with racism no matter what.

Depends on what you're used to. I'm in the Toronto area, which is more southern than parts of Washington, California, Minnesota, etc.. Usually they're not that bad here, but this winter has been nasty so far!! It's just if you have to shovel it, or drive a lot in it that it gets you down really.

Other than that, yah, I'll say I'm very proud to be Canadian. We have a lot of freedoms and honestly, it's not like they're abused. Toronto is a huge melting pot. By the way, it's also home of the biggest Carribana (sp?) celebration outside of the West Indies and everyone joins in. It's a blast - and usually HOT (during August).

Yup..I hate to have to agree, but it just seems like it's imbedded in human nature or something. Like maybe a throwback to survival of a certain subspecies (if that makes any sense) or "tribe" say way back when we were apes (now I know this could get contraversial, but it's not meant to be, just I do believe the Darwin theory). Maybe that's why it seems to be taking mankind so long to recondition themselves that in this modern, global world, there's really no need for that primal sense now. As sappy as it sounds, it IS a small world, and when it comes right down to it, all we ALL want to do is have at least enough to live comfortably, love our families and protect our freedoms.
