Like the rest of you I don't like this new UM as much as the old but it's NOT because of Robert Stack. They took away the cool creepy music with this awful new theme and this guy Farina is not a good fit for a host because he seems too cheerful and matter of fact. Almost like he's reading a news broadcast and you recall the disclaimer "what you are about to see is not a news broadcast". LOL! The Forensic files guy or the lady who did Autopsy on HBO or even Bill Kurtis would be better.

But I would see it again if they had new stories on there and I'm sure they'll do that sooner or later so when will it happen?

They can't just show repeats forever or if they do that is REALLY stupid on Spike's part and Cosgrove since Cosgrove should know that new shows have not been done in a decade and that's important to the integrity of the show.

There are so many cases they could profile now they would have ideas coming out of their ears.

This is a really good question, are there going to be any new episodes, and if so, when are they going to start producing them? I can't see myself watching 5 years of reruns (as the deal with Spike is for 5 years). Since 2002 (the last year new episodes were filmed), there are many stories that they can take on. Is Cosgrove Meurer short of ideas, or do they just not care anymore? I have a feeling it's not because of ideas which is really unfortunate to the dedicated Unsolved Mysteries fans such as myself and the countless others on this forum.

In my opinion, the repackaged episodes (that are now being repeated) would be better off with the original format (with Robert Stack) and having Dennis Farina providing the updates to which Stack never had the chance to complete due to his passing. My biggest peeve with the repackaged episodes is the lack of mentioning dates! It's so lame having to hear "On a Monday in hot August..." or "May 8th...10PM...there was a strange call received by..." While the original format episodes were shown, Cosgrove Meurer could have filmed new episodes with Dennis Farina so that we could actually watch something respectable.

The probably don't give dates because when some viewers hear the case is around 20 years old they could lose interest and deem the case unsolvable.

But this show is DOOMED if they don't make new episodes. These reruns will only last so long until they cancel the show.

If either was the case, I don't see why UM would be on the air at all. Even if Cosgrove/Meurer wanted to produce new episodes in the very worst way, the acquiring network would have to give them the go-ahead first.

Yeah, that's also partly true Kane. Spike TV probably puts Unsolved Mysteries on the backburner, as it's not one of their top rated shows. However, it's a double edged sword because the episodes that they show are at inconsistent times, and reruns that span 20 years! Not to mention how the people look in the re-enactments with the mullets, big glasses, and clothes that are completely out of fashion...LOL! It's little wonder why the younger crowd would watch it...it's safe to say that the bulk of the people who watch it are the ones who watched it from the Stack era. I have a feeling that Cosgrove Meurer was happy to get the money for the 175 or so repackaged episodes, and not care what Spike TV did with the show. Whether or not they will even consider making new episodes is probably not something they are thinking about right now. In my opinion, how they can do this to a show that still has potential is beyond me.

Good points, Mark10. However, one cannot be certain as to what Cosgrove/Meurer are really thinking about or not thinking about. But if I had to speculate, I would say that if they had their way, UM would be back in production.

On the topic of my previous post, I believe there is some truth to my suspicion that Cosgrove/Meurer is unable or unwilling to produce new episodes of UM without an explicit network order to do so. The general rule would be to get a network deal for new episodes first and then film them, not the other way around. One wants to avoid the risk of filming new episodes, then failing to secure a network's committment to airing them - and possibly suffering the heartache of having the episodes permanently unaired.

As the old saying goes, better safe than sorry.

I use to have membership to Filmtracker in a monthly basis, which is more reliabe than IMDB, and saw that the UM production people are more involved in films than television now for the next years. In addition, one of their last shows on tv "Proof Positive" didn't do too well and was taken off the air. It featured unsolved or mysterious stories that were eventually tested with reliability and conclusive tests. It featured stories like the New Jersey Devil, Hauntings, and Ufo stuff. The host, Amanda Tapping, was atrocious and mundane, even Virginia Madsen ran CIRCLES around her.

I am curious about the new UM Pilot that was done with Clancy Brown? If not mistaken, they did an hour pilot with Brown and looks like that will never see the light of day. Maybe it will surface in the future who knows? Also with Farina's involvement, it seems that pilot will be left shelved in the archives.

You're not the only one who has thought about that. I remember hearing rumors about the pilot, but I don't know how true they may be. Man, wouldn't that be cool if this thing does exist and got leaked? I've seen unaired pilots of other shows, so it does happen on occasion.

I am surprised that A&E, TRU.TV(formerly court TV), Discover ID never picked up UM... those networks core audience are people that watched UM.

To me A&E would be a perfect marriage (then again A&E did mess up "In Search of..")

I've always wondered if the fact that UM did "the unexplained" has something to do with those stations not picking up the show.

How did they screw up "In Search of"? It's a show I like, so i was just curious.

That is actually a part of it. True story - I had an opportunity to talk with some folks from CourtTV a few years back when I worked for an attorney in Palm Beach Gardens. I asked if CourtTV had any interest in UM. The guy said "isn't that the show about UFOs and aliens?"

However, I can understand what the man was getting at. Some networks have a certain format that makes it incompatible with certain shows. For this reason, a show like UM is simply unattainable for some stations.

To me, it is kind of like asking National Public Radio to hire someone like Michael Savage or Jay Severin.

I was thinking the translation was closer to "I'm a moron who only works at court tv because my uncle is a vice president and my dad made him give me the job. My biggest contribution to the network was to change it from court tv to tru tv and send the viewship down the toilet. Wanna get some hookers and do some coke?"

I sort of liked Proof Positive, but I thought it was a little cheesy, almost on the level of the Urban Legends tv show where they show re-enactments of urban legends and then at the end, reveal which ones really happend and which is faked. Kinda lame.
