Whenever I see a photo of a missing person I often try to imagine what they might look like today, assuming they are still alive. But then the thought dawns on me, more often than not, that this person is probably dead somewhere and their body just hasn't been found. Not a nice thought to say the least. But, there is a reason these people didn't come home. Sometimes we can speculate and draw our own conclusions as to what may have happened that caused them not to return, but in the end that's all we can ever do.

It's pretty depressing all around if you really think about it.

They are haunting to me because that person in the photo has no idea what lays ahead in their future, be it a murder or abduction. They may look cheerful in the photo but little do they know that it will be used, for instance in a "missing" poster.

I think they bug me because we know that the person in the picture (more often than not) has met a grim fate and so many questions are left unanswered.

Kurt Sova's picture comes to mind, just a normal school portrait of a teenage boy. But that boy never got to grow up, to experience life beyond his own town, to have a wife and maybe a family of his own.

It's sad.
