6-Year-Old Learned To Drive From 'Grand Theft Auto'

Posted: Wednesday, January 7, 2009
Updated: 8:16 am CST January 7, 2009

Wichomico Church, Va. -- The parents of a 6-year-old Virginia boy who tried to drive to school in his family's sedan after missing the bus are facing charges of child endangerment.

State police said the boy suffered a bump on his head after crashing the family's 2005 Ford Taurus Monday morning.

The boy, whose name wasn't released, missed the bus, took the car keys and drove nearly six miles on Route 360, about 61 miles east of Richmond, while his mother was asleep.

Police said he made at least two 90-degree turns, passed several cars and ran off the rural two-lane road several times before hitting an embankment and utility pole about a mile and a half from school.

The boy told police he learned to drive playing Grand Theft Auto and other video games.

Northumberland County Sheriff Chuck Wilkins said 26-year-old Jacqulyn Deana Waltman is being held without bond. Forty-year-old David Eugene Dodson was released on a $5,000 bond.

The boy and his 4-year-old brother were placed in protective custody.

O_O

maybe i'm just ignorant, but taking the children away from the parents sounds a little extreme. i realize the kid was in serious danger but who would have thought that leaving your car keys within a child's reach would open likelihood that they would actually take them and try to drive the car? are most six-year-olds even big enough to reach the pedals?

My brother started the car and it rolled down the driveway when he was about 3. Thank goodness, my mom was able to run to the car and jam the brake. No one was hurt. Needless to say, my folks never left the keys in the ignition again.

I think pressing criminal charges against them and taking their children away
is extreme in my opinion. And why was the father released on bail but not
the mother?

First, that news item about the 4-year-old with a shotgun and now this.
They sure don't make kids like they used to!

Yeah, you don't hear many kids that eager to get an education.

Default Little Big Shot

Well, you went for a drive in our Ford Taurus
In your brand new fancy school clothes
You could hardly reach the pedals
and the steering wheel barely came up to your nose
Ooh, I didn't wake up this morning
Cause I was so damn tired
And my eyes were too bloodshot to see
That our car was gone from the driveway
and so were you and the keys

Because you had to be a little big shot, didn't cha
You just had to miss the bus
You had to be a little big shot, didn't cha
All our friends are now talking about us
You had to get to school yeah right
but you got pulled by a blue light
You had to be a little big shot that's right

And the cops were all impressed with your driving progress
That you learned from a video game
But they're throwing us in jail
saying that we're the ones to blame
But now you just don't remember
All the things you said
And you're not sure that you want to know
I'll give you one hint, young man
You sure did put on a show

Yes, yes, you had to be a little big shot, didn't cha
You had to prove it to the crowd
You had to be a little big shot, didn't cha
All your friends were trippin' out
You had to have the front page, bold type
You had to be a little big shot
playing Grand Theft Auto last night, Oh oh

Well, it's no big sin to be tardy again
And you should've left the keys alone
But you went over the line
When you could've just stayed at home
No, no, no, no, no, no

You had to be a little big shot, didn't cha
You had to get behind the wheel
You had to be a little big shot, didn't cha
Our car you just had to steal
You had to be a showoff last night
No video games for you tonight
You had to be a little big shot that's right
