Default Darby as a waiter in "Dave Picks up the Check"

Did anyone notice Darby (Parley Baer) as a waiter in the episode " Dave Picks up the Tab"?

No, but now I'll have to go find this episode and watch it.

Oh yeah, that's the one with the mix up between the Zebra Room and Zefra Rooms.

There's a few episodes that Frank Cady appears in minor roles other than that of Doc Williams. The one off the top of my head that I can think of is Birds in the Rain Gutter. I think in another episode he was selling paint.

Joseph Kerns was in quite a few of the early episodes. No doubt before starting Dennis the Menace.

One thing I like about old sitcoms is that you see a lot of the same character actors playing a variety of characters in the shows.

This is so true. I got the second half of "Rawhide" for Christmas and there are so many actors that were really unknown at that time on this show. I can remember Agnes Morehead of "Bewithched" on an episode of "The Rifleman" that was so unlike her character of Endora, but the voice was the same.

I haven't seen "David Picks Up The Tab" in a long time. I'll have to go back and watch it to catch this (I don't think I ever remember Parley Baer in another role besides Darby so this will be fun to watch.)

No doubt that Ozzie had a lot to do with casting on the show since many actors returned again and again. I often wondered why Gordon Jones was only in a handful of episodes? He was quite effective as Butch Barton.

We really didnt get to see a lot of Butch Barton. Was he only on for one season?

I didn't mind not really seeing him anymore. I thought Ozzie was starting to get a few to many friends. After Thorny left Oz had friends all over the place. Doc and Darb had appeared before but after Thorny they were featured a lot more. He had Doc Williams, Darby, Joe, and Butch. Were Butch and Joe in many episodes together? Now that I think about it, I really remember Butch around more with just Darby and Doc. I do think Joe and Butch may appeared in a few episodes together at least but I'm not at all sure. I'm thinking the one with the poker party at the house and then they find out Rickys bringing a girl and her parents to dinner. I know Joe goes to get Harriet at the movies. I think Butch was making spaghetti... or was it Darb or Doc?

Maybe Ozzie wanted to add Joe Randolph in, a character who was always talked about in the early years and on radio, he was even in Here Comes the Nelsons in the form of Gale Gordon, for the character history with the show. Or maybe he just felt he needed a different type of personality. Darb and Doc were round about nice guys. After Thorny left Ozzie really did need a real best buddy to hang around with that he could also argue with and get into mischief with. lol

Bart was just kinda of a jolly ol' guy, but came across as kind of dim witted to me. idk.

I liked Joe Randolph. I liked how he could make Ozzie crazy and unhinged.

Oz never got frustrated with Harriet or the boys. They were never mad at eachother. He might get upset and crazy with a situation, or in more cases than not a percieved situation, but not with the person. Ozzie was always mad at Thorny. That Gosh Darn Thorny. They were always having little tiffs. After Thorny left I guess he needed someone else to drive him crazy and get under his skin.

I liked Thorney much better than Joe. The episode that stands out the most for me with Butch is the one where Ozzie draws against Tex Barton to win the tent for the little boys. Butch ends up winning the tent. I just realized BARTON was the last name of the Tex character and Butch's real name.

I also like Thorney A WHOLE LOT BETTER than Joe who, IMO, was often annoying.

My favorite ep with Butch Barton is The Road Race where Darby and Butch egg Ozzie on to race the jalopy against the hot rod.

He was terrific on Dennis. Also appeared on I Love Lucy if I'm not mistaken.

My favorite Joseph Kearns appearance on O & H was in the 1958 episode A Cruise for Harriet, where he played the purser on the ship. And Penny Edwards, with very dark tresses whereas people remember her with blonde hair, makes a memorable appearance and is very cute in that ep! Connie Harper appears as a florist, somewhat before her regular role as Miss Edwards, the law firm secretary (beautiful!).
