is a credit card required or can i just pay for everything in cash? i don't have the mental capacity to fully understand credit cards (i've only used debit), i wouldn't have the patience to deal with them even if i did, and i don't trust banks in the slightest. i gave up on my bank account last year and bought a piggy bank instead, and i'd like to keep it that way. it's much more reliable.

with that said, you can cash in checks at banks you aren't a member of, right? i've been using my dormant bank account to cash in my paychecks, but i'd rather just close the damn thing because i hate banks.

Banks are a godsend. I use my Visa Debit card wherever credit cards are accepted and it comes out of my checking account. it's just like paying cash.

Your distrust of banks is something you're going to have to overcome, I'm afraid. =/

Credit cards are not a necessity. I know several adults who do not have credit cards, and are just fine.

True, they are not a necessity. I don't have one.. I just thought of something though, my two cousins got a Visa card that you can buy at a grocery store and you can use it for what you need.

Need to make sure that the numbers are covered or at least the pin number so someone doesn't write down the number and you can't use it because they are using it. You can't take it back either.

Banks, if you use a check you should go to your own bank because there may be a fee if you are at another bank that isn't yours. Kinda like ATM, you should use it at your own bank.

Credit cards are good for establishing credit, so people like lenders at the bank, real estate agents and the guy at the dealership will look at your report and think "This gal has been working hard on her credit!"

Paying your bills on time and not letting anything go to collections will show up on your credit report, too.

Sarah... you should really get past this. A piggy bank isn't the best idea for saving money. You need someplace where you KNOW nobody will steal your money that you have access to. I bank at a credit union; no minimum limit on how much I can have in my checking account, and it also comes with a savings account (I didn't have to apply for that - it came with the checking account). I love it... I can sit here right at my computer, at home, and transfer my own money from checkings to savings. Don't have to go to the bank to do it.

Banks today are MUCH MUCH MUCH more improved than they were 10, 20 years ago. Hell, even 5 years ago.

My dad always warned me NEVER get a credit card. I am doing fine without it. Visa debit card works just as good. There are other ways to build your credit that are much smarter.

Having a bank account is much more secure, if cash is lost or stolen, then it's just gone, but if you have a bank account and you lose your debit card, you can report it and get your money is safe.

I think it's a good idea to have just one credit card. Pay for a few items throughout the month, and pay the bill off every month to avoid interest fees. Credit cards are not hard to understand, and you're certainly smart enough to handle having one. Credit cards are handy to have for an emergency or for travel expenses. They do help build credit as well.

Not usually. Ever hear of identity theft? Bad checks?? banks have to protect people/customers! You need help w/ your money. You can't go on as you are. Ask your parents or someone for help.

Yes. But not for SOME people. Has to paid off you see. And not with a fistfull of money blasted open from your "piggy account".

More than sure about that, positive. I've known Sarah for years, and she's a bright girl. Just because she's nervous about savings doesn't mean she can't handle a credit card.

child's piggy bank? the thing is made of glass. i have more cash than i'm comfortable with keeping in a wallet, i'm keeping it out of the bank at least for now, what do you expect me to do with it? leave it lying around the floor?

anyway, thanks to those who gave non-idiotic feedback. i don't have to make any immediate decisions, but i'll be giving it some thought.
