Lol Michigan City Bans Being Annoying In Public

BRIGHTON, Mich. (AP) - Ticking someone off could get you a ticket in one Michigan city. The Brighton City Council on Thursday approved an ordinance allowing police in the Livingston County community to ticket and fine anyone who is annoying in public ``by word of mouth, sign or motions.''

The Livingston County Daily Press & Argus of Howell reports the measure is modeled on a similar ordinance in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak.

A city attorney says there could be situations where the measure would violate freedom of speech, but that those cases will be reviewed by the city.

The ban takes effect Jan. 2.

Well, I guess asking for directions, spiritual witnessing or asking to be helped to be removed from a burning car is out of the question there, huh?

Gosh, I wish it was in effect here in New York. They want to use traffic officers to give tickets for those of us that block the pedestrian walkway when we are driving in cars at red lights. They want to enforce that law even more now. I wish this "annoyance" law was in effect.

Well, why don't you try walking in front of the car, around it when it's blocking the crosswalk.

My issue with it is that when there is crazy traffic and you think you're gonna cross the intersection but wind up blocking the crosswalk because the light suddenly changes. There are some situations that you cannot get out of. I just don't want to be held accountable for something that I cannot control.

well that's odd. anti-harassment laws are one thing, but ANYTHING can be annoying to someone. it's a matter of an opinion.

Red face

Funny, when I saw the title I thought they were referring to Michigan City, Indiana, on Lake Michigan and on US 12 west (in reality, southwest) of the state of Michigan.

exactly. it will probably be overturned. seems to me if i wanted to report someone for annoying me by talking on their cell phone or by wearing a bright-colored shirt, i'd have a legitimate case.
