What songs did your parents not allow you to listen to as a kid? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I know for me, one particular song was "Don't mess with my toot toot" by Desiree LaSalle in 1985. I was seven years old and my mother said that she didn't want me singing it because it wasn't of the Lord. LOL. I guess I can understand that since I spent a lot of time in church and I don't think that it would have been appropriate for me to be singing that through the church halls.

I teased my mom about it this morning and we both had a good laugh over it. What about you guys? Throw me some songs.

I was into Cypress Hill, Bone Thugs, Dre & Snoop. My folks definately didn't like them.

I recall a road trip we took once. I was about 13 or 14. I was listening to Cypress Hill on my walkman tape player. I must have had the music too loud cause may dad was like 'What the hell are you listening too?" He grabed the tape and poped it in the car stereo. I believe the song was "Pigs" by Cypress Hill that was playing when he heard it, and that was it he lost it. He grabed my case full of cassettes and threw them out the window. That sucked cause I had to ride hundreds of miles with out any of my favorite music. It sucked! Plus I had no more music that was my whole collection.

I could listen to anything (50's and 60's)--There were some suggestive or offensive lyrics, but not many. There were some songs people claimed some things were said. It was true sometimes, but with other songs, I never saw what the fuss was all about.

My parents never liked my music, but tolerated it to a point. I'd just listen to the radio or play records when they weren't around. When I had my band, they supported my playing, even if not the music itself.

My parents never objected to particular songs (because they didn't know them anyway). In general, they'd say, 'why is the music so loud'? or, 'The lyrics don't make sense', and stuff like that.

I remember general controversies (in the country) about certain Rolling Stones music, and other songs, like Louie Louie, or the Beatles' Please Please me. I always thought the objections were silly. It's all in the interpretation of the listener. You can put any 'spin' (no pun intended) on any record. If one is looking for something offensive, they'll find it, I suppose.

They didn't object to any of the music I listened to, mostly because my taste in music is so tame.

Plus, I grew up listening to a lot of the artists they liked (The Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, the Carpenters, Mamas & Papas, etc.) and grew to like them as well. So no major musical conflicts.

The only music I was never allowed to listen to was Prince. He has a song called "Controversy' in which he recites the Lord's prayer. My mother thought he was sacreligious, and didnt want me listening to him. My uncle liked Prince so I could listen when I was with him. It didnt help matters none that the first record I ever bought was the 1999 LP. I could listen to it but not when my mother was around. It wasnt until Prince did Purple Rainthat my mother came around.

when I was growing up my mom listened to AC/DC, Van Halen, BTO, Black Sabbath among other things, and she liked most of the stuff I listened to including Judas Priest, Metallica and Nirvana.

...what she DIDN'T like was when I'd run around the house singing "I've Got Rythm" like Ethel Merman.

Back in the 60's there wasn't anything really objectionable as far as my parents were concerned. In fact they liked the music then. There is one song that my dad didn't like and did not want us singing. It was called"Bottle of Wine". I can't remember who recorded it but it was kind of a light hearted drinking song. My dad was very opposed to it because he grew up with an alcoholic father and it was not funny to him!

For me it would be everything by Twisted Sister. Then again, I wasn't much into hard rock music growing up and still am not today. Funny; I remember hearing the Atlanta Braves used the song "I Wanna Rock" whenever closer John Rocker took the mound. "IWR" was also used on occasion on the Jim Rome show earlier this year.

Well, my parents weren't the type to tell my sisters and I what we could and could not listen to. So that was never a problem. However, there were groups that I was into that they-my mom especially-thought were questionable. Guns N' Roses are the perfect example. And even though my parents were of the 60's generation, they both hated the Rolling Stones and were less than pleased that I was into them.
