Radio annoyances - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Do any of you here have any pet peeves about listening to the radio, and if so, what are they?

Here's one of mine: counting commercial time as part of the 10-minute interval between traffic/weather reports. WORD does this in the morning with Russ and Lisa for the first three hours of the program. Oftentimes, due to commercials, you don't get but 4 or 5 minutes of program content before the next traffic/weather update. Fortunately, this ends in the 9 A.M.-10 A.M. hour, and you get more program content without the traffic/weather reports.

Don't get me wrong-- I realize that commercials are a necessary part of radio, but that is one thing that bugs the heck out of me.

I have a few pet peeves about radio myself

Playing the same songs over and over and over and over again.

DJ's who play two songs and then proceed to talk for the next half hour.

I big pet peeve with oldies radio:

Abandoning their format and playing nothing but 70's music. In my opinion the likes of The Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Hall & Oates, Peter Frampton do not belong on oldies radio at all, thats classic rock. Also oldies radio seldom plays anything pre Beatles(no 50's rock, no girl groups, no doo wop, no surf/instro and the like). Pretty much the same big hits from 1966-74 over and over again.

Only time I listen to the radio is in my car and thats usually in between tapes.

I hate it when there are commericals on every station at the same time.

Plus I can't stand those annoying DJs who sound like they are hopped up on drugs all the time.

i hate the morning talk shows. i'd rather here music on my way to work (or home from in my case) than some idiot full of hot air babble on.

radio (well, top 40 anyway, what i listen to) currently has a habit of overplaying songs more then ever before, and it is quite irritating. a song doesnt need to be played every hour. seriously ive heard So What by Pink enough to last me the rest of my life and more, geez

For some reason, my father enjoys talk radio-- this is what led me to my original post. A lot of talk radio is about politics, and generally, to me, that gets somewhat boring. Rush Limbaugh, from Monday-Thursday, is all (or mostly) about politics, until what he calls Open Line Friday, where (I believe), you can talk about pretty much anything you want to.

I, however, agree with you about talk radio. I'd rather listen to 99.9 Kiss Country in Asheville than to listen to droning politics talk.

One other thing that bugs me is about the top of the hour newsbreaks. When I rode in a Wal-Mart truck with my father, he would oftentimes listen to WORD (when it was just AM 1330/910), and the top of the hour newsbreak would come from CBS Radio. That went on for a good while, until they switched to ABC radio, and I liked that, I think, just as much as CBS. Now, it's FOX radio. FOX is all right, but I miss the days when it was CBS and then ABC.

Is there any particular radio network newscast that you happened to like, and were you saddened/angered/disappointed when they suddenly changed from that to another that you don't like as much?

^ I've enjoyed talk radio, most especially Glenn Beck. Unfortunately, I can't listen to his show anymore because I work when he's on.

Terrestrial radio. I hardly listen to it anymore. I'm not totally happy that XM and Sirius merged, but it's still a lot better than anything on FM.

Another thing that bugs me is when (and this is about 99.9 or any country music station) the DJ announces that a certain artist is coming (say Brooks and Dunn), and you get set to hear a good song from them (one of their best, and one that I personally liked, was called "Believe," and, I think, had a lot of organ in it), but then you get a song that you don't like as much or perhaps even hate/detest ("Boot Scootin' Boogie" was that to me; I personally detest that song, and I change the station when it comes on).

One more is when a radio station has an utterly obnoxious jingle. WSSL, I believe, is still like that to me-- I cannot stand their ID jingles.

I cant stand talk radio from either liberals or conservatives, and sports has no place on radio, thats what television is for.

A good alternative is college radio. These are student run, and features music that you wont hear anywhere else. I DJ at WMU's radio station, and the rule here is not to play any commerical music of any kind because its well represented elsewhere. We have specialty shows that features genres ranging from punk, reggae, jazz, bluegrass and soul.

Really the best way to hear music is from your own collection.

I can't stand it when a song comes on that I don't know the name of and the DJ doesn't tell give the title or the artist but let a song that's been shoved down my throat for the last quarter century get played and they make darn sure I'm told what it is.

Another thing that really irks me is when a song by Genesis is played and the DJ says that's Phil Collins and Genesis. I'm sorry but that is not correct. If the record is credited that way then fine but it's not.

Radio stations that refuse to play nothing but songs a particular artist is most known for. Country stations are notorious for this especially those that play alleged classic country. George Jones had over 160 chart singles yet the only thing played is He Stopped Loving Her Today, Kitty Wells is known as the Queen of country music but I have never heard anything other that It wasn't God who made honky tonk angels played on the radio.

I could go on but I'm sure you get the idea.

I do get the idea, yes. Great response. You just summarized what I said before, which is great. One song that I haven't heard in an eternity is "I Didn't Know My Own Strength," by Lorrie Morgan. I happened to actually enjoy it while it was on the radio, but I haven't heard it since.

FM plays talk radio...in the morning!

FM should play music 24/7.

And I also can't stand the monotony of the songs, do I have to hear "Another Brick In The Wall" 100 times?
