Yes, racoons may look cute but in the final analysis they are wild animals. And often have rabies.

I don't think they knew about rabies back then as they do now.

It wasn't just Charles, Caroline was the one who talked him into letting them keep the raccoon. She definitely should have known better as well... she was just about the most sensible mother in TV history, except for that episode.
Charles and Caroline might have figured that the girls would get tired of Jasper after a few days, at which time they'd turn him loose. But Jasper bit Laura (and Jack) before that happened. Miss Beadle even let Laura bring the raccoon into school to show it to the rest of the class. According to wiki, Louis Pasteur and Emile Roux developed the first rabies vaccination in 1885. This vaccine was first used on a human on July 6, 1885 – nine-year old boy Joseph Meister (1876–1940) had been mauled by a rabid dog. They certainly knew about rabies then (Little House took place in the mid-late 1870s), and Charles was correct in that episode in saying there's no treatment for it (at that time). |

Yes that is a good pt. about Caroline - it really wasn't very sensible of her (and she usually is.) Miss Beadle was no better letting Laura bring the racoon to class - well Miss Beadle was nice but not super smart (although not stupid either) |
