Default Taming of the Shrew episode

Hi, I'm new to this forum. When Wings was on the air, I was too young and busy with my partime job to see or appreciate it. Fortunately, I was able to catch the reruns on cable later on. What can I say, I just feel in love with Joe, Helen, Brian, and the rest of the crew immediately after about a couple of episodes.I became an addict and was able to finish the whole series. Then I moved overseas and kinda forgot about the show. Now that I'm back in the US, I was surfing youtube and stumbled on the themesong and I'm hooked again. I can't get enough of it.

Anywho, I want to talk about an episode I recently saw called The Taming of the Shrew. It's the one when Helen gets help for her anger towards Joe's new girlfriend when she return from New York to find that he has moved on without her. I must say that towards the tail end of the episode was so touching. I loved what she said about how it wasn't the fact that she lost her boyfriend, it's because she lost her best friend. And throughout all of this Joe's expression is so deep and endearing. He knows that he's deeply and you can just tell that the situation kills him too. Tim and Crystal did a great job in this scene. I was moved. They are my favorite tv couple. What do you guys think about this episode?

Welcome to Sitcoms Online.

That's a great episode. The highlight of that episode for me was when Helen's talking to that older guy and she just loses it and starts yelling at him and grabs his shirt. The ending was great too.

One of the many things I love about Wings is though it can be silly and hilarious most of the time, it can also be touching, and serious when it needs to be. I can't really say that about very many sitcoms either. Wings had heart. Some of the most memorable moments of the show IMO, were when it become dramatic and serious like the time Joe blew up and gave that speech in "Joe Blows" or when he proposed to Helen in "A Decent Proposal". I know there are many more examples, but those are the first ones to come to mind.

I LOVE that part! "I don't wanna play anymore!" Poor guy. "Taming of the Shrew" is one of my fave Wings eps.

Oh my gosh yes. "Joe Blows" was awesome. Time Daly should have gotten an Emmy nomination for that. The way he threw those baggage tickets on the counter and how he looked at Helen and told her to stop running to him everytime she has a problem with her boyfriend.

I totally agree with you that Wings definately had heart. I guess the first episode that showed me that was the one with Helen's birthday and they showed the film footage of her birthday party when she was young with the Hackett brothers. It was so sentimental and nostalgic. When Joe gave Helen the cameo and she figured out that it belonged to his mother, I was like thinking to myself "this is my kind of show". I like films that make you laugh but also put these little touches that tug at your heart. Another that comes to mind was the one where Joe and Brian are running with their arms in the air pretending to be airplanes and the they end the show with the footage of them doing the same thing when they were young. Love Wings. I can't seem to find another show like it

Hi Glad you found us here. We're one big happy family here at SO I'm Kristen.

I love that episode too. Wings definitely has a nice heart. It's a shame it never got the attention and respect it deserved. For me, the best part of the show is the characters. They are likable, realistic people that you can picture yourself hanging out with. I could never relate to the Friends gang or the Everybody loves Raymond family, (I don't like either show.) but I can relate to the Wings gang.

Hope to see you around

I know what you mean. I like Friends too, but when it comes down to it, I can't really relate to them and their lifestyle whereas the Wings gang were simple people who grew up togehter and it had that small town vibe. Sienfeld was funny only the first time around and after I saw the episodes twice, it just seemed so over the top. I don't how to explain it, the Hackett brothers and Helen just seemed to really click with me. I think Crystal Bernard put it best in one interview where she state that they didn't have the trendy haircut or the fancy clothes. I'm just kicking myself for not realizing this when it was on the air. When I first came on I was like in the high school. If I had only saw just one episode, I know that I would have been hooked. Ironically the episode that I did manage to catch was their series finale. I remembered really liking it but it was too late to fall in love with it. I think if people just gave it a chance and watched the series in order, they would fall in love with it just as I have.

By the way, thank you all for welcoming me. I already feel like part of the family.

I first started watching "Wings" when I was in, like, the fourth grade. I didn't really appreciate it. Then after years of not watching it, I got back into the summer after I graduated from high school (2000). From that point on I was hooked. I came to this messageboard and found a great Wings family. Which is great because out there in the real world (mostly my job at Kroger) I can't find many people who like this show.

I can't believe we're just one season away from completing the series on DVD. You should have seen us back before this show came to DVD, lol. We wanted it! And now it's almost complete.

As for emotional scenes, I love the one where Joe and his long lost mother have their talk about why she left. I also love Lowell's farewell scene. And as weak as I think the final season was, the finale more than made up for it. It's one of my favorite finales of all-time.

And welcome to the boards. Any addict of "Wings" is a welcomed addition to these boards.

Thanks Adamatium for welcoming me. Like you, when it was airing on NBC, I really was too young to appreciate the charm of the show. I'm glad that back in the days USA networks aired it so many times that I became hooked. There was a long time from 2001-mid 2008 (due to work and moving overseas) where I kinda forgot the show. Lukily I found the theme song and a video montage of Joe and Helen on youtube that made me go, "I remember really liking that show when I saw it," so I scrambled to find the show and rewatched it and because I kinda remember the overall plot, this time around I watched it for not only the laugher, but the underlying meaning and the heart of the show. It's this episode among many other heartfelt scenes that made me realize what a special show it was. I remember that when it was on the air, it was not a huge hit but it had its diehard fans or it would have only lasted two or three seasons. I see now the the reason why it was on for so long was that the fans who were stuck on the show saw the same thing that I see in the show now. I can't say that nowdays I see any show like it and the acting was wonderful not only for the comedic timing but for the heartfelt moments. This time around I watch the show and remember to look at all their reactions and facial expressions. Love Wings. Thanks to the earlier fans that loved it so much for keeping it on for so long so that us later viewers can fall in love with it also.

Welcome from me to the boards, too!!

Wings is still one of my all-time favorites and this ep is favorite, too. Always get a little teary-eyed when Helen is telling Joe that she lost her best friend. Man, I always wished I had a "best friend" that was that good looking!!

I also think Brian is hilarious, especially during the Transitions class. He had originally gone with Helen to try to pick up chicks, and later he's crying into the chest of that lady. Then he's boring everybody talking about Carol. Too funny!!
