Yankees Pitcher Mike "Moose" Mussina Likely To Retire

It's been reported on ESPN/ESPN2. Probably good but I can definitely see him making a comeback. He would leave with his first 20 win season ever, but he's only 30 wins away from 300 career wins as a starting pitcher (270 now) and he's only 145 some strikeouts from 3,000 strikeouts for his career. I can see him retiring for a year or two, doing sports broadcasting and taking time away for his family and all that, then coming back. If not, he had a good career. Thoughts on this & the possibility of coming back in general?

How's that? I personally liked the guy. Never really cared for him as a fan, cause I'm not a Yankees or Orioles fan. I never heard him say anything controversial though either, did I miss something or do you just not like the guy personally?

oh LOL- I see. That's a funny way to put it lol.

Anyways, I don't think this guy is retiring for good. He'll back. And if he doesn't somehow, he'll be in the booth most definitely. I look at him like a guy who could join the playoff coverage, the Fox coverage or just joining a local station like Girardi did with the Yankees, before becoming the coach last season.

But that's for another day.....To get to the topic at hand......

It's very true that Mike Mussina was a good pitcher throughout his major-league career but off the field he was, to put it kindly, an anal opening, especially when it involved Toronto. During his career he was involved in 2 separate incidents which did not exactly endear him to Blue Jays fans.

The first happened during the 1993 All-Star Game in Baltimore. Mussina was part of the AL pitching staff representing the hometown Orioles and the manager just happened to be Toronto's Cito Gaston. Mussina was injured at the time and was not expected to pitch in the game. In the 8th inning, Mussina got up to throw in the bullpen on his own and the fans, thinking he was ready to pitch, began calling for him. When Gaston brought in the Jays' Duane Ward, as he had planned to do all along, the fans booed Gaston and, more seriously, issued death threats at him whenever he brought the Jays to Baltimore. This season, Gaston was brought back to manage the Jays after a 10 year absence. When Mussina, playing with the Yankees, made a start in Toronto, Gaston was asked about that All-Star Game misunderstanding and, still visibly upset, refused to comment.


Even worse was what happened a decade later when Mussina joined the Yankees. On Sept. 5, 2005, the Blue Jays held a touching pre-game ceremony to honour their longtime play by play man Tom Cheek, who had to miss the occasion because he was suffering from a cancerous brain tumor. Cheek had called every single Blue Jays game on radio from their first ever game on April 7, 1977 up to June 3, 2005, a streak of 4,306 consecutive games which ended because he had to go home to attend to his own father's death. In 2006. Tom Cheek would die of cancer.

As for the game itself, the Jays beat the Yankees 6-4. Mussina started the game and was charged with the loss. Afterwards, he said that he lost because his pitching and his timing was off because of the ceremony since it was 15 minutes too long!


There's a real role model for you! Mike Mussina, class act all the way!
